I’m unsure if this is a feature or bug, but when using Microsoft Edge OR Chrome and choosing the option to limit Bitwarden to access site data only when clicked on (r-click extension, choose “This can read and change site data,” then choose “When you click the extension”), the extension fails to sync. Changing it back to “On all sites” resolves the issue. This action can easily be reproduced.
I tried setting it to “On specific sites” by r-clicking the extension and choosing “Manage extension” and adding “bitwarden.com” and “bitwarden.net” wildcards, but this did not work.
Does anyone know what domain to add so that I can enable the setting while still being able to sync the Bitwarden extension?
I can’t actually sync Bitwarden in Edge at all. Which sucks because I’ve recently begun using Firefox more and items from there aren’t showing in Edge (like my login here!). Changing the site access doesn’t seem to do anything.
Unfortunately when I manually sync in Edge, it just say “Sync failed” and doesn’t provide any clue as to what might be wrong.
There have been many reports of sync failures recently, associated with one of the December extension updates. In almost all cases, this is a temporary glitch that can be resolved by completely logging out of the extension (Settings > Log out > Yes) and then logging back in .
Thanks, grb. In this case, this is an issue that can be reproduced at will, and I believe it is not related to the other sync issues you mentioned. For example, the sync issue I am talking about can be broken and restored using the following steps, but the goal is to be able to use the “When you click the extension” setting and still be able to sync the extension with the vault in BW’s cloud. To reproduce…you simply right-click the extension and choose “This can read and change site data” and then choose “When you click the extension.” It then changes the icon. You click on the icon and then refresh. Go to sync, and it fails. Put the extension back on “On all sites” for the “This can read and change site data” setting, and then it syncs fine. Again, easily reproducible. Just curious if this is something on BW radar to fix or if someone else in the community has been able to find a workaround. I am an enterprise and personal user of BW.
All the best.
It may be the case that this is a use-case that is not supported by Bitwarden. The best way to find out whether Bitwarden would consider this to be a bug or a feature request is to file a New Issue report on GitHub.
I had the very same annoying syncing problem for years with Opera’s extension. Today I finally got it. I selected extension to run “On specific sites” and added this site https://*.bitwarden.com/*
Why on earth Bitwarden doesn’t tell us this? I have asked them for help many times. In Bitwarden Security FAQs they write “Site access settings for the Bitwarden browser extension must be set to On all sites , or to On specific sites with the Bitwarden server added to the list, in order for the browser extension to work properly.”
But it is not enough if you add https://vault.bitwarden.com/*
This sentence found in one internet forum may explain it all:
“As for the host field, if nothing is specified we use https://identity.bitwarden.com for the login, and then https://api.bitwarden.com for the vault synchronization.”
