Unable to set up "Unlock with biometrics" in Chrome extension

I’m trying to set up ‘Unlock with biometrics’ in the Chrome extension but every time I click the checkbox, I get the message ‘Browser integration is not set up in the Bitwarden desktop application. Please set it up in the settings within the desktop application’. I have tried the same using the Edge extension and get the same result.

The screenshot below shows that I have already enabled Browser integration in the desktop application so I’m really struggling to work out what else I can do.

Any tips appreciated!!

Is your Desktop app actually running when you get this error message in the browser extension?

Thanks @grb, yes I can confirm the desktop app is running. The screenshot I attached above shows them running side by side.

What is your OS?

I’m using Windows 11

  1. Have you enabled Windows Hello in Windows? If you’re having problems with this, have you installed the latest Microsoft Visual C++ Redistributable?

  2. Have you enabled “Unlock with Windows Hello” in the Desktop app preferences? Have you confirmed that you can use biometrics to unlock the Desktop app?

@grb, thanks for your patience!

  1. I have enabled Windows Hello in Windows and can confirm that I can log into Windows using Windows Hello facial recognition. Here is what I have installed in terms of MS Visual C++ Redistributable(s):

  1. I have enabled “Unlock with Windows Hello” in the Desktop app and can confirm that I can unlock it using facial recognition.

Everything seems to be as it should except the browser extension still thinks Browser integration is not set up

Thanks for providing the requested information. However, I’m afraid that I’ve reached the limits of my expertise in this matter. Unless another forum member with more experience in biometrics than I steps in, I would suggesting getting in touch with customer support.

@grb I appreciate your effort trying to diagnose my problem even if there was no obvious solution in the end. Thank you so much for your support.

I took your advice and contacted customer support. I’m happy to report that they were able to resolve my problem very quickly. For anyone else who might be having this issue, here is the response from customer support:

This issue sometimes stems from the HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software[your_browser]\NativeMessagingHosts\com.8bit.bitwarden registry key not being created. You can try the below steps, with which some users have reported success:

In Bitwarden Desktop:

  • Disable Login With Windows Hello

  • Disable Browser integration

  • Restart your machine.

In Bitwarden Desktop:

  • Enable Browser Integration

  • Enable Windows Hello / Biometrics

  • In the Browser Extension:

  • Enable Biometrics

Just a heads up that this solution worked for me.
