Unable to purchase premium subscription

I’m running bitwarden self-hosted. I’m on the latest version, 2023.1.0.

When I attempt to purchase a premium subscription it opens the following page:


I’m logging in with the email address that I registered and created my vault with. It’s the one I’ve added to all of my devices.

I get “An error has occurred. Username or password is incorrect.”

Am I doing something wrong?

If you are self-hosting a Bitwarden server, then your account email will be known to your own server, but Bitwarden’s servers will have no record of any account under that email. So you have to start by registering for a new account.

If I register for a new account on their server will I be able to add the license key to my server?

Can you clarify what you are trying to accomplish?

I just want to enjoy the benefits of a premium subscription while continuing to self-host.

You will need to have an account with the online cloud service first.
You can then purchase the applicable subscription (individual or organization depending on your needs) via the cloud account, which will give you access to download your subscription license.
You will then upload the license to your self-hosted server to activate premium features.
