Trouble logging in on browser extensions

Having just signed up and installed the extension on Chrome and Brave, neither let me log in with the master password. For a new user this is very unnerving, as we do want to migrate all our users to a manager, but we can’t be constantly dealing with this kind of glitch. It looks like this has been going on for a while, so I guess my question is, wether the devs are any closer to finding a fix?

@Rene_Kalkbrenner Hi!

Just to check the “basics”:

  • You’re sure neither in your email address nor in your master password are any typos?
  • Did you try to login to the server region you created your account on (US = vault.bitwarden.com or EU = vault.bitwarden.eu)? Those two are separate server regions and you can only login to your account’s server region.

Also, do you have any problematic characters in your password? For example, Iphones have a habit of changing “straight” quotes into the 66-99 style quotes, and if you have spaces, did you double up on any of them?

Most all the “Master Password not working” complaints seem to come immediately after someone sets/changes their password, or after they have been using biometrics (etc.) to login for a long period, without exercising their password memory.

The two best pieces of advise I have are to

  1. Follow the advise in this guide so that you end up with an emergency sheet, a reliable master password, and all the appropriate security controls.
  2. Before you get “too invested” in filling out your vault, completely logout and back in, using only the information on the emergency sheet, so you have confidence it will work in a true emergency.

If you do not end up solving your master password problem, do know that the nuclear option, deleting and starting over, can be accomplished without knowing your master password.

Having revised my steps I think it may have been a regional issue, as I had set up EU but the extention defaults to .com

The characters are fairly standard and unabiguous, so that should not have been the issue.

As I am living proof nothing is idiot proof to a sufficiently talented idiot, maybe the extenstion should be programmed to prompt users to select the region before inserting the username.

You are not alone. This seems to me one of the most common problems with logging in for new and even existing users. For me,

  1. The option is unusual. I don’t have any service that I can select a location to store my data.
  2. The UI is not obvious. Many replies to the new users may have been averted with a different UI, but OTH, who reads all the fine prints on account signup anyway.
