There was a problem reading the security key. Try again

I had my security keys all set using FIDO2 Webauthn.

Today I had to remove (deauthorize one key) and add another.

Now, whenever I choose Read Key, I get the message " There was a problem reading the security key. Try again."

In experimenting, I deauthorized all the keys to start from scratch and now I can’t register any.

Note that I tried registering the new Series 5 security key using " YubiKey OTP security key" and it failed.

The keys work fine with other apps. Any idea how to fix this?

It is working again. I used the keys on another web site then exited BW (on the web) and restarted it, and now it is working.

I also can’t use my security keys anymore when Bitwarden is running in my browser. I keep getting error messages (“An error occurred when we trying to verify your key”) and this is disrupting my work flow. Bitwarden used to work quietly and unobtrusively in the background letting ME decide how to protect my accounts. Now it seems Bitwarden is making the decisions I’m obliged to follow. Long-time paid supporter here looking for a PW manager that lets me stay in the driver’s seat.

I have tested this using three different websites in Firefox 129 with Bitwarden browser extension 2024.7.1 (with passkeys enabled in Bitwarden). In no case do I get an error when authenticating using a Yubikey.

Do you still get the error messages if you disable the “Ask to Save and Use Passkeys” option in the browser extension?

Yes, I disabled the passkey feature a few weeks ago. I’m on Linux Mint 22. No matter the browser, I get an error message when trying to use my long-time saved security keys. Thank goodness I’d also saved 2FA app on my phone and emergency backup recovery codes. Otherwise, I’d be locked out of my own accounts.

Possibly related to the issue linked below?

FYI, the user who filed that report was able to work around the issue by adding the affected domains to the Excluded Domains list (under Settings > Notifications. Perhaps something to try.

Thanks for the suggestion. I’m using Librewolf & Firefox, though. For now, I’ve removed BW from one browser and am copying-pasting from the second browser into the first. This way, BW doesn’t cover my input fields…

Not sure what this is supposed to mean. If you are referring to the feature that overlays an auto-fill menu on form fields, then you can disable that by setting the option “Show Auto-fill Menu on Form Fields” to “Off” under Settings > Auto-Fill.

Also, copy-pasting is not very secure, as it exposes your credentials to the system clipboard. If you can’t/won’t auto-fill, then I would suggest using the drag-and-drop feature (which bypasses the clipboard).

I don’t want to argue. I’ve decided to migrate my password database from Bitwarden to another service. I couldn’t even log in to Bitwarden’s website this morning. It won’t accept my security key. And now it won’t accept my authenticator app code. I’m fed up with all the error messages when I NEED access to my passwords. I don’t have the time to waste on solving this anymore.

Hope you find the new pastures greener.

In my mind, this is the single biggest take-away from this conversation:

I completely agree that one always needs a plan-B, especially when dealing with technologies that are still maturing.

Issues (such as yours) that only affect a single user can usually be solved; however, when the patience to complete the necessary troubleshooting process is absent, no progress can be made of course.

All of my responses to you have been attempts to assist you; I’m sorry that you’ve evidently perceived this as “arguing”.

Toodles!

“Toodles”? Are you an actual employee of Bitwarden? Or just a “community” member? Very unprofessional. Reflects poorly on the company.

I am not employed by, nor otherwise affiliated with Bitwarden. I am just a customer like you.

Bitwarden employees have a blue Bitwarden shield over their avatar. @grb does not, so it is safe to conclude he is not an employee. He is knowledgeable and has been on the community for a long time, though.

And I have never seen anyone in a “community forum” writing more elaborated, knowledgeable, “researched” and detailed answers than @grb .
