Hello FlyBoy, welcome to the community.

What you say in the title is true. Obviously you can click anywhere on the page to dispense with it. My usual practice is not to use the drop-down at all. I use Cmd-Shift-L to fill passwords, including quickly rotating through them (each press of the key group) if I have more than one for the site, until I recognise the correct one.
