Survey: Do you use the Generator tool on its own? (Complete)

We’re working on improvements to the Bitwarden menu and information architecture. But we want to make sure the changes will work for you. This is a 5-minute survey, where we’ll ask you about the Generator tool and how you use it.

Update: Survey completed. Thanks to those who took it!!

Hey @mbit, usually I like participating in surveys. However, I closed the window when the first question appeared. I am using Bitwarden in a private context, so why does my “job role” matter here?

Oh good point! I didn’t think about that being a weird question for users who aren’t part of an organization in Bitwarden. I’ll adjust the wording. Thanks, Marlin!

Update: Bummer, I can’t edit the survey once launched, so I added a note in the original post to write “n/a” to the first question. Learning for next time  Thanks again.

I am also concerned about that you seem to be using a user survey to get feedback on the following question:

What do you think the minimum number of words should be for a generated passphrase?

…especially because you’ve offered suggested values of “3” and “6” as the only numerical responses (the remaining options being “I don’t know”, and “Other”).

Any effort to increase the minimum number of words should be based on entropy analysis and prevailing cracking technology (e.g., GPU benchmark tests), not on the opinions of survey participants.

A more suitable phrasing of that question would be something like the following:

What is the shortest passphrase (number of words) that you would ever want to generate?

Importantly, the response to this question should only have two options:

  • Enter a number: ____
  • No opinion.

I also have concerns about the vagueness of the following question:

How do you feel about us removing the Generator from the main menu? (Keep in mind: It’d be accessible from other places)

My answer would be: it depends on where you were planning to move it to (which is not an available answer option).

Also, even this question is likely to generate ambiguous results:

How many times per week do you open the Bitwarden extension or web app?

The word “open” is too vague. I “open” the extension probably a few dozen times per week just to unlock it. I suspect that many users mostly leave the extension window closed, and use various autofill methods that don’t require the extension window to be opened — however, even such users would need to “open” the extension pop-up frequently, just to unlock the vault.
