Search within and inside all notes

I am another refugee from Lastpass… And I am also missing the searching functionality in the mobile app that Lastpass had: a simple, intuitive search function that searches through all fields by default including the “Notes” section of login items.

I too use the Notes field to add comments that I use later to search through ~2000 items (mostly login items). I cannot do this in the mobile app. I have to go to my PC to perform such searches :frowning:

I have read the 100+ comments in this thread. I am not a programmer and cannot contribute to this free open source project. I wish I could.

I am imploring the devs to add this feature request to the top of their priority list.

The comment from Gigawatt expresses most clearly what could be achieved, time permitting.

Soon in 2024, the search function is still not good, you can’t search notes, custom fields, and security notes, I hope to improve it as soon as possible

@Bowen Welcome to the forum!

The above is not entirely accurate. Unless you are using the mobile app, Bitwarden can search all of those fields.

Much of the discussion in this thread is about the required search syntax not being sufficiently user-friendly. However, this is not the same is saying that such searches cannot be performed.

If you would like assistance with how to search notes or custom fields, I would suggest starting a new topic in the Ask the Community forum.

@grb

I think I found the reason why custom fields and content in security notes cannot be searched on the Android mobile terminal and the win version of the chrome plug-in. For example, there is a message recorded in my security notes, “MyFatherPhoneIs8012345”, when I search At 8012345, nothing can be found. It is impossible for me to remember the content of an entire line. Such a search is very poor.

You’d need to add wildcards: *8012345* will work, at least in the Chrome browser extension.

Thanks, it does work in the chrome plugin, but I hope that the official will improve the search syntax as soon as possible, so that everyone can search for substrings by default on the plugin version and Android version. After all, search is a basic feature

I am disappointed that this feature request was created in 2020 and will soon be in 2024, and the search function still cannot meet the following requirements:

  • basic search should be extended to at least custom fields or notes.
  • should work on the mobile apps as well, not restricted to the desktop etc versions.

Sadly, I still haven’t seen any improvements in the latest bitwarden roadmap.

Search absolutely all data, including the custom-text-descriptions!

Need way more powerful iOS search please.

Yes, the key is the lacking capability of the mobile apps, iOS in my case, not the web vault, desktop apps, or browser extensions. In those three cases, you can search globally and notes are included (or can be). I have found for some reason that email addresses are not found by default if they appear within notes, or at least some don’t. However, that can be overcome by searching using >email_address*.

However, because the mobile apps only use a Basic search, the contents of notes are NOT searched, which is what is desired in this thread.

Good to know about the 7500 characters (10,000 characters after encryption) limits for notes. Thank you.

Agreed. Hoping someone can point me in the correct direction regarding using syntax for now. I’m having trouble searching within Secure Notes on the iOS app. For example, I have a secure note with the following text:
Royal blue 1, 2, 3
Smith garage right 1234, left 5678

The following don’t work
Garage
Garage*
garage
*garage

What is the proper syntax to make this not come up if I want to search for garage. Why does this need to be so difficult @bw-admin?

Mobile apps use “Basic Search”, which only searches within item names, usernames, URIs, card brand names, or card numbers (last 4 digits). Mobile apps do not search notes or custom fields.

If you want to search within a notes field, you must use a non-mobile app.

Thank you @dh024 but that does not solve my request.
Here is why:

  1. I would like to search only inside the notes of an item and not all the folder items;
  2. It does show if the searched text is found in a item, but it does not allow to jump to the text inside the notes, making the search only a partial solution. It would be great to have a previous/next to allow navigation between the searched/found text like all text editors have;
  3. Because of 2, it would be great if it highlighted the found text so it would be easier to find it when scrolling;

You are wrong about #1; if you use the advanced search expression >notes:searchterm in a non-mobile app, then the search will be limited to the notes section of each item.

As far as #2 and #3, I would suggest posting a new Feature Request.

Thank you @grb for your comment, but my point in #1 is to be able to search the notes of a single item and not all the folder items. Unless I’m doing something wrong, the search only allows me to search all items in a folder and not just a single item, like I stated in #1.

If your goal is to determine whether a search keyword is contained within the notes section of a specific vault item, then you could narrow to search to the relevant item(s) by using additional search terms:

>+notes:keyword +login.uris:*example.com*

On the other hand, if you just want to find where within the notes text the keyword is located (which is what you suggested in #2 and #3), then I would recommend that you start a separate feature request to propose full-text search within vault items, or within notes sections only.

A work-around (or solution) for you would be to use the Web Vault, or to open the browser extension in a floating browser window using the “pop-out” button. When using either of these methods to view a vault item, you should be able to use Ctrl+F as usual to conduct a full-text search of the displayed information.

I switched from LastPass to Bitwarden a few months ago. You have a great product and I am glad that I switched. There is one LP feature that I miss a lot though, which is that searching includes results from INSIDE secure notes. For example, if I search on “passport” then all my notes that contain that word will be shown. Currently, BW only includes notes where the search term appears in the title. Looks like this is very popular feature request, and it’d make a great addition to the product.

@joeking42 Welcome to the forum!

Are you using a mobile app? If so, the relevant feature request is here:

You can already search in the Notes field if you use any non-mobile app.
