Search within and inside all notes

thank you for making this a priority!

It’s a pity that the search field doesn’t also encompass the data stored in the notes field of each entry

Can you try this out ?

@dh024
Can you confirm this?
Looks like searching inside notes does work on the browser extension

notes: text you want to search

A space has to be added after the colon mark :

Hi @Vachan - yes, the current search does includes Secure Notes, and as long as you are searching for whole words or use wildcard searches at the beginning and/or end of words, it works fine. Sub-string searches on their own still do not work, however, as pointed out in some of the posts above.

Also, I don’t actually need the >notes: clause within a full-text search to find matches within Secure Notes, either. I believe this clause just restricts the search to the Notes field within ANY item. So, anything within Secure Notes items, since it is all ā€œNotesā€ field, as well as the Notes field from items like Login Items. But it can be handy if you are searching on a common word.

Hello
Agreed and to be more generic, search should target all fields, allow wildcards or fuzzy search (partial word).

Hi @Balou06 - welcome!

Regarding your suggestion above, do mean specifically for the Bitwarden mobile apps? I ask because those features are currently available in the other Bitwarden clients.

@dh024, hello
Can’t agree, I just displayed a record with a note and tried to search part of the text, it works neither on windows version not on smartphone (iOS) version.

As I mentioned above, it won’t work on mobile apps, like smartphones. But it does work in Windows. I just tried a search myself on the BW Desktop app for Windows, and no trouble. Maybe you are doing it wrong?

Did you see this post above?

Here is a quick demo of searching inside note fields. First, I search on the word unique, which is in the notes field of A Test Account. I also perform substring searches using the wildcard character (*). Inside notes fields, you must use wildcard searches for substrings. Strings enclosed by whitespaces can be searched by whole words, however (including punctuation, if necessary). Most common fields can be searched by whole words or substrings, as demonstrated at the end of the video.

No updates on this feature after 20 months?

This should have been implemented from the beginning. Notes that are not searchable are barely useful. A simple substring matching would do.

If you use the proper syntax, substring searches work on all clients except mobile. See my post immediately preceding yours.

My bad, my searches were not returning results because commas are considered part of the word to BW (kw1, kw2, kw3), which I think is counter-intuitive, but at least the wildcard does the job.

Go to the notes field and type in a term, like ā€œjustatestā€

In the search field, you can start typing that word, and everything up to ā€œjustatesā€ returns ā€œno resultsā€

It’s not until you type the full word in its entirely that it shows up in the search results.

So, for another example, if ā€œmileageā€ is your word, ā€œmileagā€ does not show up in search results.

Love BitWarden, and thank you for the work you do.

Hi John - welcome. Currently, you can’t perform substring searches on the mobile apps, but if you are using any other Bitwarden client, you can perform substring searches on notes or note content. See my posts above for details on the substring search syntax.

  1. I’m not promoting Evernote. Would this survey be something like Evernote?
    So, something like:
  • search by:tag
  • search by:content
  • matches: "notes"
    ?

So, search within and inside all

  • notes: matches: ā€œnotesā€
  • search by:content
  • search by:tag

?

One can already search within notes, @anon15241427. Are you suggesting search by tags? If so, please add your support to this thread:

yeah

A doubt, where can I find the search syntax guide?

per example: Search your Vault | Bitwarden Help Center

Does a bitwarden have a search code?

Tagging items is not implemented yet, sorry - that’s why I suggested that you add your vote to the feature request to add tags and search by tags to Bitwarden!
