Says restart for update but never updates

I had to finally manually download for the update. The update says it needs to restart for update but NEVER updates! Just repeats over and over and over. Finally just came to site and manually download. \

Version I had is 2024.12.1 and even after manually downloading the 2025.2.0 installer it is still version 2024.12.1. Something is broken with the install.

@molitar You are talking about the desktop app…?

I have no major problem with the automatic update on Windows 11… but I didn’t “test” the current installer… did you try it again? - For me that sounds more like some kind of problem with your system (maybe anti-virus programm interfering with the software?).

No I don’t have antivirus software except for what comes with Windows. Nothing else has issues just Bitwarden Desktop it will not update even when I use check for update. I had to go download latest version again. The updater needs to be fixed for desktop.

Okay, I guess, you can report it as a bug on GitHub and maybe they can reproduce it.

I’m still not so sure it’s not your system… Until a few minutes ago, I had the desktop app 2025.2.0 installed (Windows 11), and that also means, that I could install every (auto-)update since I-don’t-know.

Now I deinstalled it. Downloaded the newest installer for 2025.2.1 - and it installed without problems.

You could try to deinstall again, then delete the local storage of the Bitwarden desktop app (hope you are still logged in on another Bitwarden app and/or have a recent export), and reinstall again. It may be that your local app data have a “hiccup”.

Did you install it “for all users”, which requires elevating your windows privileges? If so, you similarly would need to “run as adminstrator” for the app to be able to write its update.

OK yes it is installed as all users. Should make mention of that during install because you would not want to run application as Admin all the time. Next update I will not install as all users.

When installed “for all users”, the app does not run as admin. It is just written to a location that requires admin to write. When run, it does run with your own credentials. But if you are the only user, it seems simpler just to install it only for yourself.
