Safari Extension won't open (MacOS 14 Sonoma)

This issue also occurs on macOS sonoma 14, als reported December 25th by 2 users in the GitHub issue referred to above.

So Bitwarden please fix the issue for MacOs 14 asap because that will probably also fix the MacOs 12.7.6 issue.

@j.rouwkema Welcome to the forum!

As MacOS 14 is still supported by Bitwarden, I moved your post out of the other thread.

EDIT: This is a corresponding GitHub issue:

Same issue here.

Environment:

  • macOS: 14.6.1 (23G93) Sonoma, Intel (x86_64)
  • Safari: 17.6
  • Bitwarden desktop app: 2026.1.0 (build 55383)
  • Bitwarden Safari extension: 2026.1.0
  • Installed from: Mac App Store

Behavior:
Safari extension shows a white spinning wheel when clicked — can’t log in or use the vault. Desktop app and Firefox extension work fine.

Tried: Reinstall, reboot, toggling the extension off/on in Safari settings. No luck. Been like this for about two weeks.

Notes: Both the desktop app and Safari extension are on 2026.1.0 no version mismatch (unlike what was reported in #17616). macOS 14 and Safari 17.6 are both within Bitwarden’s supported versions.

I’m getting the same here. Tahoe 26.3 with Safari 26.3. I have both an M1 Mac and M3 Mac and they behave the same. The Bitwarden extension icon will show then disappear a few times when it starts up, but it never works. I had a fresh install on the M3, it was the only extension and it still didn’t work. If I do it really fast I can choose under Edit > Extension Actions > Bitwarden to open the popup but it closes immediately. I do believe this is a problem with Bitwarden and Safari, not just something on my machines.

FYI, just on a whim, I totally uninstalled Bitwarden (including deleting leftover things with AppCleaner) and reinstalled from the App Store and it works now. So it might have been a problem updating an older version. Not sure, but I’m glad I got it working. I don’t use Safari as my primary browser, but sometime I do need to test things in it and it’s a pain to login to anything when the extension wasn’t working.

@j.rouwkema @zfs0f You both are on Safari 17.6, but it is possible to update to Safari 26.x on MacOS 14 (Sonoma):

(–> Safari 26.3 Release Notes | Apple Developer Documentation)

I think you should try to update Safari to version 26.x. Here is a first report that this worked for them.
