There is a widespread move to passkeys for security.
On my iPhone I use Face ID for login passkeys when I can and these are stored in Bitwarden.
If I was to lose my iPhone, how would I get into websites, etc using my windows laptop which doesn’t have Face ID? (I’m thinking about situations where I might be unable to purchase a new iPhone straight away eg while travelling.)
Given the passkeys your are talking about are indeed all stored in your Bitwarden vault, then you can use them from any device where you installed the BW browser extension or mobile app and are logged in to your BW account. (PS: And given the site/relying party doesn’t have any restrictions in place.)
Thanks for the reply - Yes, I do have Bitwarden on my Windows laptop but how could I use an iPhone Face ID passkey when my Windows laptop does not have that facility?
I’m a beginner with Bitwarden and passkeys…….
There is no such thing as an “iPhone Face ID passkey”. The stored passkey just facilitates the local user verification (or “user presence”) mechanisms (well, theoretically…).
On Windows you use the browser extension. And when you want to login with a passkey on a site you then get a popup window, choose your passkey and are logged in. (that’s roughly how it’s supposed to work)
Why not just try it yourself to see how it works?

I use my passkeys stored in BW with my Windows laptop all the time. Works fine as long as you have the BW browser extension installed and you are logged into your vault.
I use FaceID on my iPhone, TouchID on my iPad, and a PIN on my Fire tablet. “User Verification” requires that you identify yourself somehow, not that the same way be used everywhere.
Yeah, and I think it may be important to add @geoffstc , that the local user verification is not stored with the passkey / not associated with that passkey. It’s just a local mechanism of the respective app and device, but not “bound” to the passkey in any way.
Thank you Nail1684. You have been most helpful and given me some things to work on (and learn more about).
Thanks wags1. Appreciate the advice. ![]()
