Request: Add more default configuration options when opening the desktop app. When I open the desktop app, I should be able to set a default view that shows no data.
Justification: I frequently share my screen for meetings, demos, etc. When I open the desktop app, the initial display defaults to All Items and the content pane shows ALL of my entries by default, including usernames and email addresses. Even the folders display by default and they can give away data as I have groups of client-specific data and I do not want to share who my clients are.
Benefit: Once open with a blank or minimal display, I can drag the window to an unshared screen, then expand to or search for a specific entry without showing every entry to the people viewing my screen.
Hey Bitwarden, you went the wrong way with privacy and security! Instead of making the default view in the desktop app secure by not showing sensitive information when opening, you put the horrible garbage into the extension. Now when I open the extension, the default view shows the ALL items view of my data, including the site and username. What were you thinking???
Possibly. I just want to make sure that a product that is supposed to be security-focused is actually secure. The desktop app has been horrible in this regard and now the browser extension is taking on that same horrible security posture. Do not expose ANY data that is not necessary to perform the necessary function.
I came here for this. Now every time I open the extension from any website, the full list of sites I have in my vault appear. This is nervewracking because I don’t need someone to see my list if they’re looking over my shoulder when I’m trying to sign in to something. PLEASE make this a priority to fix this because it wasn’t even an issue before in the extension.
My concern is when I’m presenting and one of my windows in the background times out… then I have to log back in. At my desk, it’s a PITA, but possible to drag the window to another screen that isn’t shared… but when I"m in a room full of people and they see my laptop screen, it’s different.
Perhaps you could configure your desktop vault to lock after a few minutes. The unlock screen itself does not have much to disclose (just your username).
If the desktop is locked, you can still biometric unlock the browser extension and then use ctrl-shift-L to autofill web pages, keeping most everything out-of-view.
I’m not sure if this exactly helps your use-case, but on windows an mac, there was a setting for one prior release, that allowed you to hide the desktop app in screencaptures. It hat some issues and was temporarily rolled back, but will return soon ([PM-14006] Prevent screenshot setting V2 by quexten · Pull Request #12570 · bitwarden/clients · GitHub), so while you can still see your client, anyone you share your screen to cannot.
it’s not about unlocking it… it’s about the app divulging sensitive information EVERY time you open the window. Whenever the unlocked window opens, the Auto-suggest, Favorites, and All Items are displayed for all to see. That is absolutely and ridiculously unsafe!
I have multiple accounts for may of the sites I use (i.e. customer apps I support with different test accounts). That means that I can’t just use key combos.
For my use case, I can’t use key combos… but the collapsed menu sections does help. I had not noticed that and it’s not available on the desktop app. Thanks for pointing that out!
Currently the Snap Store desktop app provides biometric unlock since 2025.1.0

Repeated use of the key combo will cycle through the matches, starting with the one used most recently (so if “password” is on a separate page, the first ctl-shift-L will match the username entered on the previous page).
This is particulary egrigious with “Secure Notes” everything is visible in plain text on the screen and there is no easy way to hide it without showing something else.
I should clarify… the collapsed items help with the plugin, but the desktop app does not offer it. The All Items is selected and all of the items are displayed in the right pane.
I can’t believe this is still an issue more than a year later. This is such a basic tenant of security… do not show anything more than absolutely necessary… security 101!
