I use Firefox and a chrome type browser with the bitwarden extension. Passkeys used to work just fine.
Now trying to log on to Gmail it asks me to insert my USB key, previously I clicked this and if my Bitwarden vault was open it would match the correct passkey but now it doesn’t and I have to select say use password or another device.
Android app seems to be the same.
Some website do work, like NHS in the browser but not the Android app.
Is this just me or is there a general problem?
Please what is the fix? I’m willing to consider another password safe.
Please do also consider that sites and apps also change their mechanisms all the time. – You can report autofill issues with the mobile apps here: Report mobile autofill failure – and you can report “passkey issues with the BW Android app” here: Issues · bitwarden/android · GitHub
Once upon a time we had usernames and passwords. (Security issues aside) the app just worked.
Now it’s random if it does, and frequently I get locked out.
What the industry needs is some mechanism that the website and the vault can communicate their facilities and if they can’t agree on a passkey format, they fall back through other versions like
OAuth 2.0 for example then falling back to SMS.
>Do you have the 1Password extension installed? (or another password manager besides Bitwarden?)
Err, no. I only use Bitwarden extension and app.
I can’t see how installing say 1Password (i’ve never heard of) would help. If you can’t suggest something relevant. I might ask you if you have a 1948 Bentley motor car?
@mrg9999 Since it’s been some time since you’ve visited the forum, I would recommend that you review the Community Guidelines before making further comments.
Why thanks for asking. I do in fact have an antique car but it is not a Bentley. Instead, it is a near-clone of the very first car I purchased on my own, but better condition and fewer miles. Much more sentimental for me than a Bentley would be. I do help this knowledge helps you solve your Bitwarden problem, but if you don’t mind me asking, I’d love to understand how you believe it would help.
As for @Nail1684 asking about “1Password … or another password manager”, my bet is he suspects a conflict between two similar applications interfering with one another. You might have noticed that he follows the bug reports fairly closely, which can greatly short-cut troubleshooting sessions. He also happens to be the resident Android “expert”.
That said, please note that us volunteers are under no obligation to offer assistance. I have a pretty good idea where @Nail1684 would have suggested after ruling out a conflict. But it does seem like you may have burned that bridge.
