Passkeys, Amazon, and multiple devices

Today, I tried to log in to Amazon on a Windows 10 PC running Firefox. Somehow, Amazon took me down the path of creating a passkey. I had no interest in doing this, but I couldn’t escape the passkey create dialog, so I played along, and when I had finished creating the passkey, Bitwarden helpfully asked to save it for me alongside my password for Amazon. I said yes. Now, when I open my vault and navigate to the data for Amazon, I see that the Passkey field is populated with “Created 9/3/2024 12:59 pm”.

If I try to log in to Amazon.com using this PC, it automatically assumes I want to use the passkey, and since I’ve successfully logged into that PC (I use a PIN), I successfully log in. I suppose I can also log in on this PC using my password, but I haven’t tried

Now, if I choose to log in to Amazon using a different device, either my Android phone or a different Windows PC, I can’t use the passkey. I get a message on my phone saying “No passkeys available”, and there is apparently no option to use Bitwarden to supply the passkey.

If I try to log in with the different Windows 10 PC running Firefox, I get a popup from Bitwarden saying “No passkeys found for this application”.

When trying to log in with a passkey fails, I always have the option of using my password (stored in Bitwarden). Thankfully, that works.

Is there something I’m doing wrong? Should I expect to be able to use my passkey to log into Amazon from multiple devices using Bitwarden assuming I’m correctly logged in to whatever device I’m using?

Thanks for any help.

I don’t think you’re doing anything wrong, and when Bitwarden passkeys do work as expected, you should be able to use them from any device.

It seems to me that the issue may be that Amazon does not support the use of passkeys that are not stored by macOS, iOS or Android operating systems (and synced to other devices via iCloud or Google). From their documentation:

It’s perhaps worth noting that I created the password while attempting to log in on a Windows 10 PC running Firefox, so there may be a little more to it than the three requirements you cite.

Just my opinion, but it seems like passkeys are not yet ready for prime time. I’m happy to continue with passwords generated and stored in Bitwarden, and accessible to any device I own with Bitwarden installed.

I am able to login to Amazon using a passkey on a different Windows 11 PC than the one I created it on. My Amazon passkey is definitely stored in Bitwarden and I am using the Chrome extension on both devices.

That said, Amazon’s passkey experience is less-than-optimal in that I still need to first enter my username and afterwards I still need to enter my TOTP. So, it is just a password replacement, nothing more.

@DenBesten Same here.

Maybe it’s a Windows 11 or Chrome thing? I’m using Windows 10 and Firefox and it definitely doesn’t work for me.
