Warn we are offline *before* we edit

It would be best if we were warned we were offline before we got started editing an item. Currently the warning only comes when it’s time to save the item. This leaves the user in a desperate state, of 1) needing to get in his car and go find an internet connection. and in the meantime not daring to do anything on his cell phone.
