New master password doesn't work!

I changed my master password using the bitwarden website. I wrote down the new password. Now neither my old or new password works!
I’m sure I wrote it down correctly.

The new password included an apostrophe (')
Could this be the problem??

Help!

quotes are known to be a problem on apple products because they tend to turn them to smart-quotes ( 66 - 99 ) instead of straight quotes ( ‘’ ) . There is a way to turn this off, but I do not happen to know what the setting is called. Easiest fix may be to use a windows-device to get into the web vault and then change the password again.

A few pieces of master password advise:

  1. Before changing it, export your vault.
  2. As changing it, update your emergency sheet (which you did)
  3. Use a 4-5 word randomly-generated passphrase
  4. Stick to lowercase letters, using only a space or a hyphen as the word separator. More length compensates for less complexity, makes the password/phrase much easier to use and less subject to the “helpfulness” you have discovered.

I think it’s called “smart punctuation”.

@crew Yeah, try to deactivate “smart punctuation” and to login in the web vault (where you changed your master password).

Do you have any other device, that may still be logged in? (I think up to an hour of a master password change, you can still use the old master password until the change takes effect - so if you can, try to export your vault if possible)

Thank you all.
I believe I set the new password from my Windows computer. I’ve tried using the new and old password from my Windows PC and iPhone on the website and iOS app. No luck.
I made a backup of my iPhone last week on my Windows PC. I think I’m going to try restoring the iPhone backup with the network disconnected and see if I am able to access my stored passwords in the app using my old master password…

That is great news. This is when you should be thanking your former self for being prepared.

It does not work that way. The device needs to be online.

The safest way is to:

  1. Create a new account using a new username/master password. To keep things easy, you can use plus addressing (e.g. crew+something@gmail.com) so you do not also need a new email account.
  2. Restore the backup into the new account.
  3. Once comfortable that it is working right, you can delete the old account and then (optionally) change the email address on the new account.
