My master password is not working anymore

In February, I tried to log into my account, as I did almost every day, with the same email address and password, but I couldn’t log in anymore.

  1. I never changed my password.
  2. The email address I entered is correct.
  3. The password is the same one I always use.
  4. I didn’t change browsers, as I have the same problem on my iPhone and Mac, in the app, and in different browsers.
  5. I already tried different .com and .eu servers.

I thought it might be a temporary issue or an error that would resolve itself, as I saw happen to other people, but no… I haven’t been able to log into my account for months and can’t access important information that is stored there.

Deleting the account is NOT A SOLUTION, because I have information in that account that I cannot recover if I delete it permanently.

I need someone to help me.

Hello @nahcares and welcome to the community.

I understand that you lost access to your vault for more than half a year. Did you already try all options listed in the help article Forgot My Master Password?

Yes @marlin, I tried everything already, except delete my account, because I have some information that I can’t recover if I delete my account.
I know was not clever, but I didn’t have any backup, I blindly trust in Bitwarden to save all of my information…

Then I am sorry to write this, but that information is lost for good. Bitwarden uses zero-knowledge encryption so that only you can access your vault, knowing the right password.

@marlin Yeah, the thing is I KNOW the right password, I never changed it, i didn’t forget it.
It’s a Bitwarden issue or bug or idk what, is not my fault …

@nahcares Welcome to the forum - and I’m Sorry to read that.

I think there are mainly three reasons that this can happen:

  1. “User error” or technical hurdles → for that, you could check again – best to compare with your Bitwarden emergency sheets – if there is no typo with the email and master password… if it still the correct master password you remember etc. – On your iPhone, you should disable “smart punctuation”, as this can change some characters you type in… A full list of things you still could try or at least check is here: [Guide] "I can't login" - Some tips for login problems/issues

  2. Technical problems/bugs → if there was a technical problem with your vault, then that is probably unchangeable now, as Bitwarden only holds backup data for the last 7 days.

  3. Theoretically/practically: your vault could be taken over by someone else who changed the master password. → did you get a “login” email, informing you that someone logged in to your Bitwarden account, and it wasn’t you? (PS: If you never received such an email, in February or after that, then I would think that this point is not very likely - especially if your vault was protected by 2FA. But it also depends on how strong or unique your master password really was/is.)

Anyway, a Bitwarden master password doesn’t change by itself…

What error message exactly do you get if you try to log in?

I guess not, but: any BW app still logged in?

What happens if you request the master password hint? Do you receive any e-mail? This way, you can make sure you selected the right server and used the correct e-mail address.

@nahcares To emphasize that point: without the correct (and working) email address, master password and 2FA… there is no way to get forward here. There are no “sneaky backdoors” or other “tricks” around that with Bitwarden.

With a Bitwarden app still logged in, that might be a bit different – or at least, you could make an export of your current vault data, to start anew.

If there was vault corruption, as written before, that could have only been remedied by Bitwarden support when it had happened within the last seven days.
