Motivation to develop a standalone authenticator?

What’s the motivation to develop a standalone authenticator which is free, but totp generator in password manager is premium?
Isn’t developing a standalone app more costly?

Hello Indranil, and welcome to the community!

I am a user and do not work for Bitwarden, but here is some information that Bitwarden provided regarding the future of the BW standalone authenticator:

from: Bitwarden roadmap - updated July 2024

So, one possibility is to enter the workforce authentication market, competing with the likes of Okta, Entra, Google, and possibly Cisco.

It’s been two months since the last Authenticator release - what’s taking so long? Has it been abandoned?

Hello,

Although I don’t know the answer to your question, I do know that there are two mobile beta programs (iOS and Android) that they are pushing to release generally. I doubt they would abandon the app so quickly without first trying to see if they can truly compete in the markets mentioned above.

Thanks for the viewpoint. I’m on the beta channel and haven’t seen a new release in over 2 months. I’m wondering if development efforts were focused on the native password manager apps, causing a delay in the Authenticator?

Yeah, I meant the beta programs for password manager apps.
