Master password not working after win10 reinstall

Hi,

I re-installed Windows10 a couple of days ago. Set it to keep my files but to delete all apps.

However, since I re-installed the extension in Chrome it refuses to unlock.
I get one of two messages - either;

An error has occurred.
Username or password is incorrect. Try again.

or

An error has occurred.
An unexpected error has occured.

I have tried both of my main email accounts, and the EU or .com versions (I am in the UK) - no joy though.

So I now have a nice quick laptop that I can’t open any apps on without transcribing the password from my iPhone.

Please help, it is driving me mad!

Can you log into the web vault?

https://vault.bitwarden.com/#/login
(Edit: this is the US URL, I am not sure what the one would be for the UK but you should be able to find it via a search here).

I’m unable to log into the web vault right now. Is there a service outage? The status page says everything is fine: Status Page - Bitwarden

Yes there seems to be service outage. There is a separate discussion about it going on currently.

https://www.reddit.com/r/Bitwarden/comments/1g509zu/issue_logging_in_is_anyone_else_getting_this/

Also, this page is usually helpful when there is this kind of error:

https://downdetector.com/status/bitwarden/

Hey, i have the same problem. Win11  Seems to be a Bitwarden Issue and not an install issue by yourself.

Still broken here, iPhone still fine.

The initial login to the extesion takes me to the web vault, where the same old problem occurs.

Any way to “validate” my chrome extension login from my iphone?

Stay logged in on your iPhone, as it may be you have forgotten your master password.

That confuses me a bit. With “extension” is usually the browser extension meant… So you can successfully login to the browser extension, but not to the web vault? Or what are you trying to say?

I’m not sure if I can still follow. “Chrome extension on your iPhone”? - On mobile, the mobile apps should be used: Download the Bitwarden Password Manager App for iPhone, Android, Chrome, Safari, and More | Bitwarden (browser extensions are not supported on mobile devices/browsers) Ah, okay, you mean something like “login with device”? I think that needs a successfull login before it can work…

Luckily my face still works to unlock the bitwarden on my phone!

When I try to log on to the Chrome extension the page looks identical to the web vault login page. Same result - one of those two error messages.

The bitwarden on my phone is not an extension, it’s a standalone app.

Thanks for the reply, any further ideas?

That’s not how it should be. Normally, if you click the icon of the browser extension in Chrome, it should looke like this:

And you should be able to login there (and not be redirected to the web vault).

Anyway, if you still can’t login to the web vault (vault.bitwarden.com or vault.bitwarden.eu) - and the server problems from today are resolved (PS: but, it maybe is a good idea to delete the browser cache after that and at least restart the browser since then), then you most likely don’t use the right credentials.

Do you have an emergency sheet with your used email and master password on it? Would be the right time to search for it. Try to remember, if you really use the right master password. Did you change that some time ago and “forgot” about it? Could there be “typos”?

Could it possibly be another email? Or a “+” email?

BTW, from your first post here:

I guess you mean “log in”. - You can only unlock a locked vault… and a locked vault means, you are (still/already) logged in. Just for the terminology… and to avoid misunderstandings.

You are quite right, I don’t always use the correct terminology, a bad habit I know.

I deleted the ext and restarted the laptop and re-installed the extension - no change.

Downloaded Bitwarden from Microsoft Store - this does work - my email and master password are correct - yay!

Added the extension to Chrome - still won’t let me login - however the login panel does now look like the example you gave above.

We are 95% there, I have access to my passwords on my laptop. I do prefer the Chrome extension though. Any further thoughts?

I have a blinding headache though, so I’m off to bed.

Thanks for your help

Ah, that is the desktop app. And that’s indeed good news, that your credentials are correct then! :+1: (BTW: If not done already, please use this opportunity, to create a Bitwarden emergency sheet with at least your email, master password, server region (US/EU) and the 2FA recovery code on it, stored in a safe location)

That’s partially good news, too!

It could be that there are now some remnants of local data, that might have (or cause) a “hiccup”. So I would recommend, to deinstall the browser extension once more. After that, delete all local storage of the browser extension, according to this help site: Storage | Bitwarden Help Center - and after that, reinstall the extension again.

BTW, you can get the link to the extension also from this page: Download the Bitwarden Password Manager App for iPhone, Android, Chrome, Safari, and More | Bitwarden (always a good idea, to use the official Bitwarden sites for the downloads…)

What I just wrote before!

:raising_hand_man:

Yessss!

Removed the extension, cleared the cache, added the extension, customised the settings (didn’t know you could do that - it is better than ever), and hey presto!

Thanks all, especially Nail1684
