Manually saving credentials

Firefox, Windows 10

We’ve learned to expect that on some sites, the prompt to save credentials does not appear. But, when I try to save the credentials manually, I am presented with empty fields I must manually fill in.

When you’re on a login page, and the credentials are filled in there, isn’t there a way, at that point, to select an option to take that data & immediately “transfer” it to the blank data fields on the “Add Item” page within Bitwarden, just as it would have transpired if the “save login” prompt had appeared.

I bet I’m not the only one, who, every time I create a new login, crosses theirs fingers that I’ll get the prompt, because if it doesn’t appear, I’m past the point of having those credentials close at hand to aid in setting up that site.

That’s why I always recommend disabling the “Ask to Save New Logins” option, and just making a habit of of entering your information directly into the browser extension (instead of entering the information into the web form). When registering for a new account on some website, the work flow looks like this:

  1. In the browser extension, click the + icon or the “Add a new login” link.
  2. Enter your desired username (or generate it using the :arrows_counterclockwise: button); same for the password.
  3. Save the new vault item.
  4. Click the newly created vault item to transfer all of the information to the account registration form.
  5. Submit the form.

It’s the same amount of work, and it never fails to save the information in your Bitwarden vault.

Sadly, I have learned this same workflow.

But coming from LP for 12+ years - WHY? Why does BW have an issue reading this information and offering to save it, unlike LP?

Ok. How do you feel about he viability of having an option to add the filled in credentials on the login page.

It’s understandable more and more sites are imposing stricter security measures, and that likely has something to do with the “auto save” thing, but would my suggestion be a consideration given those restrictions, or is it just not an option under those conditions?

Seems like we may have moved on from LP for common reasons, mostly that BW is just superior to LP in ways that are most important.

I don’t recall this being a major issue with LP, so one might say if LP can do it consistently and efficiently, why can’t BW? But, with this extra security push, has this currently become an issue with LP as well?

There is such an option (“Ask to save new logins” and “Ask to update existing logins”). Evidently, there is some technical reason why this does not always work 100% (if I had to guess, it is when web developers write HTML with inscrutable or nonexistent id attributes on the input fields, which prevents Bitwarden from recognizing the username and password fields). I would suspect that the same technical issue would prevent an on-demand transfer of the information from working correctly. But this is just me guessing.

“There is such an option (“Ask to save new logins” and “Ask to update existing logins”)”

I’m not referring to the auto save settings. Already enabled.

What I’m saying is that there should be a manual “Add Item” option that will enable the credentials, already in place in page login fields, to be filled in, on the “ad item” page when “Add Item” (or whatever else the chosen title may be) is selected, susbsequently simply waiting to be “saved”

Which is why my response continued as follows:

(emphasis added)

ok, I get it. Thanks.
