Make "Show quick copy actions on Vault" the default (ability to copy with 1 click)

Related to: ✅ New UI: copying a password requires 2 clicks

Copying a password is the primary piece of UI used in the Password Manager. In the old UI, copying a password took 1 click (click the copy button).

In the new UI, copying a password takes 2 clicks (click copy button > click “Copy password”). This is inconvenient because it is adding an extra click every time users want to perform a primary function. There is also cognitive dissonance because users expect the “copy” function to be performed when a “copy” icon is clicked. Being given menu options when clicking a copy button (Copy username / Copy password) is not inline with usability standards for copy buttons.

In the related issue (✅ New UI: copying a password requires 2 clicks) this has been addressed via “Show quick copy actions on Vault” under Settings > Appearance. However, seeing as copying password is the primary function of a password manager, I would recommend making 1-click copy the default for your application.

welcome, @anonymous27826349872 to the community!

There now also exists an option in 2024.12.4 that enables “click to auto-fill”, which is safer than “click to copy password” because it will fail if you are on a look-alike website.

I also would like to disagree. That copying involves the clipboard and that’s not ideal for security. The primary function should be auto-fill - and for copy actions that don’t work by auto-fill, the drag & drop functionality (which doesn’t work via the less secure clipboard) will hopefully soon come back.

I don’t understand the complaint you’re making.
There are situations where the autofill feature does not work and there are situations where you have to enter the password in a separate app.
Both situations you’re going to be able to remember the username off the top of your head but you’re not going to remember an autogenerated password even if you’re looking at it. Hence the copy functionality.

Your reply only makes sense if the argument is to remove the copy functionality completely. Not in the case of providing an ease of use functionality like copying the thing you (99.99% of the time) want to copy without having to perform additional clicks.

@StevenD Welcome to the forum!

Thanks, but honestly, I don’t understand what you wrote, as that would be also possible with drag & drop (I didn’t mean autofill!). As you can see here with the “old” extension, it was possible to drag & drop all major fields into other apps (and for my personal taste, even faster than with copy & paste):

2025-01-13--12-17-52-firefox_VFMCetFuds

(my Firefox extension is still on 2024.11.2 for testing purposes - like these)

That functionality is temporarily lost with the new extension, but as far as I know, they are working on it. And as you see, with drag & drop functionality, the copy buttons are not really needed (maybe with the exception of rare and special cases, where drag & drop may be not allowed by an app). - And as written before, drag & drop has the advantage of not using the clipboard (i.e. no sensitive data even temporarily stored in the clipboard).

It’s not clear where my description was lacking. Please explain what I should clarify.

Drag and drop is not convenient in the case you need to paste it to another app. It’s also something that mostly caters to those using a tiling windows manager. While it’s a cute functionality I fail to see how it would address the problem.

You’re still making multiple clicks. You selected the item and you clicked on the password. What I understand this thread is advocating for is that hitting copy would be the sole action you take after opening the extension. Instead of having to hit the copy button and then select “Copy Password”

Well, I think that’s a bit of a personal view. But you’re right - with drag & drop you have to enter the item view, and for the copy actions not. After I got used to drag & drop, I found it convenient enough and liked the security gain. But everyone as they like it.

My main point was also: drag & drop also worked - also with other fields BTW - for “copying” username, password, TOTP into other apps.

I’m not sure if I understand you here correctly, but the thread is not about that in particular, but making it the default setting for the extension.

You could change the setting right now to 1-click-copy actions again by turning on: Settings → Appearance → Show quick copy actions on Vault

Sorry. I misunderstood. Rereading the initial comment I see that now.
Thank you for the reply.

… as I was posting a similar thing in another topic… this feature request would lead to a default view like this (without compact mode and with default width) - and just to get that clear:

(because the three separate copy buttons - without combining them with “wide” or “extra wide” - take space away from the item title and usernames)

I’m not sure, if everyone would be happy with that?

Note: I just changed the title from “Make default: Copy password in 1 click” to “Make “Show quick copy actions on Vault” the default (ability to copy with 1 click)” as it’s not only about the passwords but all three copy actions.

EDIT: I’m blind. Didn’t see the option was there.

~i have to agree with this post. copying password is now a two-click process, and copying both to clipboard is now a 4 step process.

this is important to me as i sometimes get modal login (like PayPal), or i need to copy between different browsers or virtual machines.

it also still fail in some web forms.

at least give us the option to allow it, like the option to fill by clicking the entree (previous UI).

i for one believe this is a stupid decision in a UX perspective. you have to balance UI and UX, if you cannot, you have to let the user decide what they like more. i don’t like MORE CLICKS.

“That copying involves the clipboard and that’s not ideal for security”.
this function still exists, but now it requires two clicks. what if my version of security is actually not using this extension on every browser i have open? we are all adults and understand how clipboards work. i understand “forcing” it to less-technical people, which is why i am asking for an option.

i just joined this forum because it’s affecting my workflow so much and it irks me enough to go through the sign up process.~

@staticvoidmain Welcome to the forum!

What do you mean by that? - The option is already there: Settings → Appearance → Show quick copy actions on Vault (this feature request is not about having the option, but making the three separate copy buttons the default)

thank you. i suppose it’s my fault for not realizing that option is already there. cheers!
