macOS Application fido2/webauthn not working

Good day!

Sometime within the past month or so, the Mac app (both from the App Store and from the downloads section of bitwarden.com) has stopped prompting for my Yubikey 2fa. Instead, it just spins and offers the option to “Select another method” or “Use your recovery code.” Eventually, I receive “The authentication session timed out. Please restart the login process.”

This is a self-hosted instance.

I’ve tried this with the following combinations of OS/application:

2025.10 / macOS 15.7.2 / Mac App Store Bitwarden

2025.10 / macOS 15.7.2 / bitwarden.com download

2025.10 / macOS 26.1 / Mac App Store Bitwarden

The behavior didn’t begin immediately after a server update, however I have since updated to the 2025.10 version of the server and retried with all the same results.

The browser extension works fine, and the website works fine.

Any thoughts?

Please post a screenshot of your Admin Dashboard.

PS: And did you already try to deinstall the desktop app(s) completely – making sure the local storage of the desktop apps was deleted – and then make a fresh reinstall?

Good day, and thank you for replying!

I did delete the desktop applications, along with the data (macOS, so under the Library subdirectories)

Attached is my dashboard. The day after my upgrade to 2025.10.1, 2025.11.1 came out, so I’m not there yet.

Thanks – but, hm. I’m not sure what we could further suggest here… I guess best thing for you would be to contact Bitwarden support or open a GitHub issue about that, as it could also be a bug.

BTW, “YubiKey 2FA” is kind of an ambiguous term… some most use it for FIDO2/passkey-2FA (with their YubiKey) and others (even looking at you, Bitwarden Help Sites etc. :face_with_raised_eyebrow:) used/use it for Yubico OTP…

Good point! I’ll be sure to be more specific in my ticket.

In this case, I’m referring to the webauthn factor, which uses fido2.

Thanks!
