I have several times had multiple accounts related to each other either in the search of or while in employment.
If somehow linking them so that while I have one open, I can see other accounts that are related would save a lot of searching, especially when the related accounts obviously fall into some other category and are therefor in different folders.
This could easily apply anytime a way to organize sites is needed seperate from how they are organized in folders.
A custom “related” field where a title can be inserted and then related items added would be great.
There is some relevant functionality, but it is probably not what you had in mind, and it is not (yet) very convenient to use.
There are two approaches that you can use, both of which rely on the unique identifier that Bitwarden assigns to each vault item.
Deep Link to Web Vault Item:
When you open an item in the Web Vault, the URL in the address bar can be copied and used later to access that item (if you are logged in). For example, if you store that URL in a related vault item, then you can copy and paste that URL into the browser address bar, and hit enter; this will take you directly to the linked item. This works because the URL will be of the form https://vault.bitwarden.com/#/vault?itemId=xxxxxxxx-yyyy-yyyy-yyyy-yyyyyyyyyyyy, where the string that follows itemId= is the unique item identifier. For more information, see Help article on linking.
Search for “Short” ID:
If you know the item identifier of the item you wish to link, then you can use the first 8 characters of the ID as a search term. The first 8 characters of the unique item identifier are referred to as the “Short ID” (in the web vault URL example above, xxxxxxxx is the “Short ID”). Thus, you can store the short IDs for related items in the Notes section or in custom fields and then copy and paste those 8-character strings into the search bar. If you need better specificity in the search results, you can used an advanced search expression of the form >shortid:xxxxxxxx
You can also obtain the item identifier from the browser extension. The easiest way is to open the vault item of interest, then pop out the extension into a floating window, right-click the window and select “View page source”, and examine the URL in the address bar of the window that is opened (the URL starts with view-source:chrome-extension://, and contains a query term ?cipherId= that is followed by the item ID).
Some of this would be easier to use if progress is made on this related feature request:
I would encourage you to describe in greater detail your vision for what the linking function you have requested would look like, and how the user would interact with it.
The custom “related” field I envision would open up with a blank title field where I could enter “xxx job”. Then the links I’d add by clicking a browse button and selecting another item.
Once clicking on an item, the Item name (perhaps also with it’s URL) would show in a list along with any other items previously selected as related. Once the current item is saved, the related items listed will show as links so that any can be opened from here. The corresponding item would also be updated to have this open item as a related item.
The title of the “related” field would be the identifier, allowing for any item to have more than one and be related to different items in different ways.
It sounds like the the Deep Link would work perfect as the URL behind the link. Even if not visible in the app, the app can look up the Deep Link to use.
where the item I’m adding to could be any other login for XXX job related to the above.
Linking separate logins like this means I don’t have to worry if the password requirements (or user ID) cannot be the same or need to be updated at different intervals (or not at all).
i really like this idea. having dynamic linking would be so helpful.
my use case is indicating which payment method is used to pay for various bills like telephone or rent. since all these things have online portals, but also even if i just create a card record. if i could link that card dynamically to an account from my telephone account login record would be so useful when i would like to update something because am closing an account, switching banks or card provider, etc.
i am already making custom fields manually for addresses so i know which accounts i need to update when i move, but if i could link logins to identities for addresses it would be so much more convenient. similarly for phone numbers if you have a mobile and landline or work phone and want to keep track of which phone is associated with any given account.
the backlinks are imperative, so you can look at a payment method, phone, address, or such and see all the accounts that it is associated with. this would drastically improve functionality and be a massive decrease in tedious management effort that gets outdated so quickly.
