Launching a login for a specific website is linked to another website login

When I launch a website login using Bitwarden, to autofill the login credentials for one specific website, the autofill prompts with the login credentials (username and password) for a totally different website. It appears that website A is linked to website B; meaning, if I launch website A, website B attempts to autofill the login credentials.

I can get by this issue by manually launching website A using the launch icon in the Autofill options and manually copying and pasting the username and password from the login credentials for website A, preempting the autofill by website B.

How do I resolve this issue? Can I delete the login for website B to disconnect the link of website B to website A, then recreate the login for website B, or will this cause another problem for website A? Will deleting the login for website B still prevent the login for website A from autofilling?

When you go into “View” or “Edit” for your login item for website B: when you go to the “Autofill options”, do you see URIs (websites) that belong to website A?

If yes, then you could just remove those URIs…

And if for some reason you want the URI to remain in the second vault entry, you can click the gear icon and then set the match-detection to “Never”.

The URL in the Autofill options for website B is specific to website B and is not the same URL in the Autofill options for website A.

I am using Bitwarden on macOS. I do not see the gear icon to “set the match-detection to “Never.”” Where is the gear icon located?

In the browser extensions on Windows, I find it here:

Bitwarden’s documentation might also be helpful.

One important detail to keep in mind that @Nail1684 hinted at… you need to alter the vault item that you do NOT want to take off the autofill list.

Thank you for your assistance, I appreciate it. I am using Safari browser and the browser extension does not have a gear icon for selected website. I am using the macOS desktop Bitwarden Password Manager in conjunction with the Bitwarden browser extension for Safari. I am not hosting a server. I checked the Google Chrome browser extension and the gear icon is not present there either. I’ll consult the link to the documentation that you provided to me. Thank you!

  • I deleted the login for website B and when I launched the login for website A, website B was still autofilling the username and password.
  • I restored the login for website B and deleted the login for website A and created a new login for website A.
  • I launched the login for website A and website B was still autofilling the username and password.
  • I deleted the login for website B and created a new login for website B. I now deleted the two original logins for websites A and B and have two new logins for websites A and B.
  • I launched the login for website A and still the login for website B autofills the username and password.
  • I “permanently deleted” the original logins for websites A and B.
  • I launched the login for website A and again the login for website B autofills the username and password.

There must be another database table with a field that cross-references and links website B’s autofill options to website A’s autofill options, e.g., website. It appears I have troubleshot as far as I can.

Hm. How do you autofill? (which of the various autofill methods that BW provides?)

Sounds to me like it would at least also be possible, that something else (other than BW) autofills here.

PS: I would look in the browser password manager first – I don’t know how easy it could have landed in Apple’s Passwords app, otherwise that would be my second guess…

Are you able to share what the two website addresses are? That might help with troubleshooting.

Either the installation of your browser extension is corrupt, or you are not entering the Edit Login screen when looking for the gear icon (the gears are not visible from the View Login screen)

@Nail1684 may be on the right track — temporarily disable your Bitwarden browser extension (for example, in Chrome, go to chrome://extensions/?id=nngceckbapebfimnlniiiahkandclblb, set the extension to Off), then open Website A. Are you still getting autofilling of Website B credentials?

A while back I exported passwords from Bitwarden to Apple Passwords because of an issue with the Safari extension for Bitwarden not working. That problem was resolved with assistance from Bitwarden Support. I subsequently turned off Apple Passwords.

Today I deleted and recreated the logins for website A and B within Apple Passwords (just like I did in Bitwarden) and resumed using just Bitwarden.

When I deleted and recreated each login for website A and B in Bitwarden and Apple Passwords, I gave each login for website A and B in Bitwarden a unique name and did the same for each login for website A and B in Apple Passwords.

When I launch the login for website A using Bitwarden, the Bitwarden login for website B attempts to autofill the username and password. I know it is the Bitwarden login for website B (rather than Apple Passwords), because of the unique name given to the Bitwarden login for website B. Moreover the interface when populating the username and password fields, has the Bitwarden style which differs from Apple Passwords interface style. I’m confident that Apple Passwords is turned off and is not populating fields rather than Bitwarden.

When I launch the login for Bitwarden, I am not using the Safari browser to navigate to the website or using the Safari extension to navigate to the website. I am clicking on the launch icon for the website in the Autofill options of the Bitwarden desktop app (macOS). Once I click on the launch icon and the website is displayed in the Safari browser, the Bitwarden desktop app attempts to populate the username field. At that time the user interface displays the login name being used to populate the username field. I launch the login for website A and the login for website B attempts to populate the username field.

I’m gun shy about the Bitwarden browser extensions. I had an issue for several weeks with the Safari browser extension after the most recent macOS update. That eventually was resolved after updating Bitwarden to the current release. In the scenario I have been explaining, I am not using the Bitwarden Safari browser extension to launch a website and populate the username and password fields. I am launching the website from the Bitwarden desktop app (macOS) and the desktop app is attempting to populate the username and password fields.

Thank you for your response, but it unfortunately does not clarify any of my questions:

To assist you, I need the answer to the first question about the websites (if you are able to provide it), I need you to clarify whether you are looking for the gear on the View or Edit page, and I need you to perform the test that I had suggested (turning off the Bitwarden browser extension).

I did as you suggested and disabled the Bitwarden Safari extension. I then launched website A using the Bitwarden desktop app. When the website was displayed, Bitwarden did not attempt to populate the username field. So that seems to prove that the Bitwarden Safari extension populates the fields even though the website was launched from the Bitwarden desktop app. I cleared the storage for the Bitwarden Safari extension hoping that would solve the problem, but the situation still persists.

Since you also have the Chrome extension, would you mind repeating this test in Chrome? I do not have access to a macOS system, so it will not be possible for me to help troubleshoot a Safari issue.

In addition, please respond to my remaining two queries at your convenience.

I did the test you suggested. I don’t see the gear you mention and seen in your screenshot.

What test did you do? Can you screenshot the top of the browser extension screen where you are looking for the gear icon? I only need to see whether it says View Login or Edit Login, so you can crop the rest.

I made Google Chrome my default browser and I disabled the Bitwarden browser extension. I launched website A from the Bitwarden desktop app and when the website was displayed in Chrome, Bitwarden did not attempt to populate the username field.

I tried to go back to Safari so I could do the screenshot you requested and now the Bitwarden Safari browser extension is not displaying in the Safari browser. This is the same issue I had for several weeks. The browser extension is rendered unusable now. I’ll see if I can see the gear in the Chrome browser extension.

Here is the screenshot you asked for. Note this is the Chrome browser extension and there isn’t a gear. Instead of a gear there is the vertical ellipses. I cannot take a screenshot of the entire dialog or browser because of personal information being displayed, e.g., login names, IP addresses, email addresses, etc.
