Why is the latest version not on Google play? On GitHub there is a new version with a new modern UI, and as far as I can tell it is a stable release. So why is it not on Google play? It’s been months since it was released on GitHub
Like you, I have been monitoring the situation regarding the play store. The last update was October last year so November and December releases have been missed. Maybe something to do with a phased release of a new UI? I don’t know.
2025.1.0 only went into github yesterday so I was going to ask the same question in about a week. 2025.1.0 seems to have a huge number of changes/PR’s.
For whatever reason, that Android rollout seems to be even on the new roadmap (so I guess, it won’t be there tomorrow…):
The latest public comment I heard indicated that the phased rollout is still at 15%. According to Google’s documentation, developers have control over this percentage.
The changes in version 2025.1.0 compared to version 2024.12.0 appear to be numerous compared to previous mobile version releases. This could explain why it hasn’t been rolled out to 100%.
Side-loading the app is an option if it doesn’t interfere with other apps.
Surprised this wasn’t done with the browser extension release, TBH…
I can think of some reasons, though. For example, this is a Good-Bad-Good protocol (like when you are giving/getting a performance review). iOS refresh: people enjoyed it, not too much gripe. Browser refresh: some people enjoyed it, but with pushbacks, and lots of screaming. Android refresh: if they don’t drop the existing features, the speed increase and the material design may win many hearts and mind.
I hope this will be a good win.
Ahhh, the notorious S*** Sandwich…
I wonder if we should assume from the large number of pull requests in the Android repo release page that the 15% are finding a lot of problems?
Bit scary.
I don’t find it scary. They are rewriting a new app, even if not really “from the ground up”, duplicating the functionalities that have been accumulating for years. Releasing it too fast, and people will complain that they drop features or the software is buggy. Releasing it too slowly, and people who can’t wait to get a hand on it start complaining that BW is dragging its feet. Damned if you do, damned if you don’t.
Related question Latest version is not on Github. Hope this isn’t breaking a protocol. Not sure this warrants a new post
Is this because of the same rewrite? I’ve noticed that the fdroid version has updated several times since October.
Could something be added to the last October release notes to indicate what is happening and / or how we can participate (maybe a link to the info) ? It’s difficult to keep track of what’s going on with each of my 50+ apps (roadmaps, beta programs, discontinued github updates, signing key changes, etc). I’m more likely to check github than websites, communties or many other places this information can be posted
I would be happy to be a beta tester for the version if that’s possible. I use it for both business and home (I’m the admin in both cases).
Thanks!
Hello Tom and welcome to the community!
Regarding binaries, check the fdroid apk in:
Thanks a ton Neuron!
Wow, that’s a lot of changes! BW has been busy!
I kept looking in github/bitwarden/mobile/releases and hadn’t seen the Releases · bitwarden/android · GitHub branch
Much appreciated
This morning I received version 2025.1.0 (19622) on my Pixel via Google Play (I’m not enrolled in the beta).
