Like in LastPass, you have an icon in the passoword field to choose a password and validate it

Not just that, but with LastPass when you validate the selection, it directly triggers the saving prompt, because password managers often struggle to detect formular validation, so you miss the opportunity to save a newly created account and potentially loose it (as you don’t know the generated password)

So with that trigger at this moment you ALWAYS can save newly created account without missing one

Please and thank you

Can you give a more detailed insight into why you “hated” it? How did it make you experience worse? I don’t work for the project but I am sure they would like to know why, too.

No worries, I felt it just kept getting in the way.
Would show on irrelevant fields fairly often and sometimes obscure placeholder text (same for the chrome extension too)

I see … sometimes it’s in the way, yes. If it’s annoying for a particular site there are options for that I think but I never used them. I really like to have the password generator button in the password fields for sites I am signing up to. It’s kind of reminding me to not use the same all over the place

I think that’s just because of your custom and practice. I’m used to glancing at the Bitwarden icon in the top right of my browser, where I know that I can get to everything password related.

The main reason for me for having such a feature is because I don’t want my password manager to autofill the form fields in case there’s some hacker active on the site that has some (invisible) fields or other hacks that can hijack your login.

I like to make sure that the site I’m logging into is the actual one I want to get into and thus auto-login isn’t as secure as I’d like.

@martin, the autofill would only autofill if the site you visited actually matches the URL you have stored in BW. It can’t be fooled.

As well as what @Toons says, I don’t have autofill turned on. That way I can look a the site myself before pressing L to insert the credentials. With both Bitwarden and myself checking the chances of being fooled are much reduced.

Bitwarden icon in browser input field

Feature function

As a browser user I would like to have a Bitwarden icon in the input field(s) where I quickly can select the suggested Bitwarden entries (same suggestion as in taskbar icon).
In same way as Lastpass and other competing products.

I understand that there is a way to get that information but I think that you are underestimating the power of convenience. The need to glance somewhere should not be there at all. I understand that glancing is not much of an effort and can be made into a habit, too.

I personally prefer to have information and functionality at the location where it is needed and UX in terms of convenience and usability never can be refined enough. I also like volume controls on the steering wheel of my car

Autofill Login like Dashlane

  • In Dashlane the Autofill Option in the login bar is faster and (subectively) looks better in my opinion. I wish it would be the same in Bitwarden

The popup from Roboform is also nice. A little icon on the right side of the text box and a popup will all the matched passcards when over it.
Almost like the lastpass but the popup is more condensed.

Thanks for keeping the thread alive

We aren’t actively working on this feature (hard at work on some other items) - but this does have our attention!

You can follow the browser extension code as we update it real-time here: Commits · bitwarden/clients · GitHub

Throwing around some ideas that give us this feature without giving up how Bitwarden currently works.

You have the popup that shows up for the username or password field with the top 2 vault items to pick. You can also view and copy the username, password, or TOTP. It’s a mini version of the extension.

If you press the “Add Login” or the View Item buttons it launches the full extension but in the center of the screen where you can do everything you need to do.

This way we keep the method of saving the password in Bitwarden first so we know the password is saved but get the convenience of the popup.

Depending on the button pressed, like the Add Login, Bitwarden can go directly to the add new login page in the extension. The same idea with the view button, Bitwarden extension goes to that page.

Another idea is if the username and/or password fields already contain text in them and the user presses the Add Login button in the mini the main extension window can grab that text and put it in the main window add login area so the user doesn’t have to retype it.

You could even go as far as to generate the password using the default last used settings in the main extension to save the user some clicks. If the user wants a different password they’ll still have the option to open the generator.

+1 long overdue but hopefully we might finally see this soon.

basically what lastpass has, lil box in any form filling area you can click, rather than the right click option it has now, minor change not sure what it would be called so had trouble searching to see if it had been requested before or not yet

Example on how it could look:
