I get the message "attempting to use a disconnected port" when trying to log in to the Bitwarden extension for Google Chrome

I like to change my Bitwarden master password at least once every 6 months. I did that today. I was able to change my master password on the Bitwarden website without a problem.

However, before changing my master password, I had also logged out from the Bitwarden Chrome extension, and now that I try to log in to the Bitwarden Chrome extension using my new master password, I get the message / error: “Attempting to use a disconnected port”. Can you guys please tell me why this happens? What can I do to fix this?

I can log in to Bitwarden from its website using my new master password, but I can’t log in to the Bitwarden extension. I have also removed and added the Bitwarden extension, but I get the same message: “Attempting to use a disconnected port”.

Please help!

@marcelita.934 Welcome to the forum!

Unfortunately I can’t tell you why this happens. But I would try to 1. deinstall the extension, 2. delete the local storage of the extension (see here: Storage | Bitwarden Help Center), 3. reinstall the extension.

Just a comment to that: of course, you can do that if you like it. But unless…

  1. there is no evidence or any other reason for the assumption that your master password got leaked / compromised and/or
  2. your master password is not “strong” enough (anymore) according to the (current or new) recommendations

… then there is no real reason to change you master password in that fixed interval. In fact, NIST recommends against periodic changes of passwords.

The most important thing, is, to have a “strong” master password in the first place - common recommendation: an at least 4-random-words passphrase.

PS: I changed the tag of your topic from “app:desktop” to “app:browser” as you meant the browser extension.

Welcome, @marcelita.934 to the community!

You might consider creating a backup of your vault immediately before changing your password. Unencrypted or password-protected JSON are the best choices.

We have seen instances of people being unable to login after changing their master password. If this were to happen to you, there is nothing quite so comforting as a current backup.

Thank you so much for your help! I followed your instructions and you literally saved my life! I use the Bitwarden extension all day, and not being able to use it was terrible and frustrating for me.

All is good now. I have set up a strong password which I won’t change again unless it’s really necessary. I can access Bitwarden from the website and Google Chrome extension again.

I really, really appreciate your help!!!

Thank you for your suggestion! I didn’t know this was possible. I will certainly create a backup of my vault right now!

@marcelita.934 Glad that it worked out for you!

While you are at it… if you don’t already have one, make an emergency sheet (physical paper) with at least your Bitwarden email address, server region of your account (US or EU), master password, 2FA-recovery code, your backup-/export password for your vault, and the login credentials to your Bitwarden email address on it, to never loose access to your Bitwarden account.
