How to move Passkey from Windows to Bitwarden?

Hi to the community, this is my first post.

I have Windows 11 (local account, no microsoft) with firefox and Bitwarden (paid version account) extension. Today i try to create a passkey login to tailscale.com but the passkey are saved on Windows 11 and not Bitwarden because i have the domain excluded in the Bitwarden notification (my fault) and save it with Windows hello pin. Now i have clear the excluded domain in the Bitwarden extension.

How to move the passkey from Windows 11 to Bitwarden?

Thank you.

@Euphoriarules Welcome to the forum!

Currently, it is not possible to transfer your passkeys from your local Windows 11 account to your Bitwarden vault, so you have to login to the service again and create a new passkey with/for Bitwarden.

If the site only allows for one passkey, which sometimes is a restriction, you would have to delete the passkey (in the service after logging in there, and on your Windows 11 you can also delete the “counterpart”, as it no longer works “alone”) before you can create a new one.

If the service allows for the creation of more than one passkey, you can decide, if you want to keep the Windows 11/“site”-passkey-pair or if you delete it after you have created the passkey with Bitwarden.

Thank you @Nail1684 for the answer, i will ask to Tailscale if is posible to keep the user and recreate passkey.

@Euphoriarules

That’s one possibility. You can also login, and when you still have your username or email, password and 2FA… and if you see in the passkey section a possibility to delete the passkey and add a new one, you probably can go on with this.

Maybe they also have guides in their help / support sites.
