We recently subscribed to Enterprise and are trying to migrate our vault over from Remote Desktop Manager to go live on Monday. Nothing speaks RDM so we had our SQL Engineer refactor the RDM data to a CSV so that it’s importing quite well, but we have a problem: All the RDM folders and subfolders are importing as Bitwarden collections and not folders. This is making it impossible to assign permissions in an easy way.
Ideally, what we’d like is for the top level of all our folders (which are named after our clients) to be collections and anything underneath those to be nested folders. However, while the conditioning CSV allows you to specify folders for personal vault imports, it seems to only allow collections for Enterprise. We either need to be able to split things as I’ve listed above or worst case, import everything as folders, then I can manually create base collections and move the data accordingly.
I assume there must be a way to do this because otherwise, it would make large Enterprise imports untenable. If someone is able to let me know if and how to do this, I’d greatly appreciate it.
I’m not sure what you are trying to do is even possible.
According to your title, you want to import folders into an Enterprise vault, right? - Well, in Bitwarden, folders are only used in individual / personal vaults. And in “organizations”, only collections can be used.
So you are correct and I misread before. Collections are all that’s possible. But Collections don’t allow nested permissions. So if we have a collection for each customer and nested collections under those, right now it appears that I can’t just assign permissions to the top level collection and have it propagate to those below it, I have to assign permissions to each collection and nested collection individually. That’s untenable. There’s no way this is the only way to do it, is it?
That’s correct. Doesn’t help you now, but you can vote for the corresponding Feature Request (that BTW uses the wrong terminology “(sub-)folders”) here:
Unfortunately, that’s beyond my expertise. Hope, someone else can chime in here, if there are alternative ways to “solve” this…
Says I have no votes, while also saying I’ve never voted for anything.
I opened a ticket with support as well before creating this thread so I’ll see what they say. If I have to manually permission all the collections, I can do it, but it’ll be multiple hours of work I do not relish doing on the weekend.
This seems like a really weird and common thing for them to have omitted. Hopefully they have a better option.
