How do I troubleshoot "Unable to auto-fill"?

I’m using Firefox extension 2024.1.1 on Windows 10.

I’ve created an “Identity” I used to fill out job applications. Sometimes it works and sometimes it gives me an error about “Unable to auto-fill.” But I have experienced this on the same page. Whether it works or not seems to depend on what fields are in view when I’ve clicked the extension button, but I’m not sure if that’s irrelevant or coincidental. Is there a way I can get more information about why this error is popping up so that I can provide a better bug report or troubleshoot if this is even a bug?

I believe that it is normal behavior for Bitwarden to only auto-fill fields that are visible on the screen.

Other than that, Bitwarden’s ability to auto-fill depends on its ability to successfully identify the input fields that need to be filled. This can be challenging when web forms use idiosyncratic identifiers in the HTML attributes for their form fields. Bitwarden’s solution to this is to allow the user to define custom fields, which can be configured to match (and auto-fill) form fields with non-standard identifiers.
