How do I remove the payment method saved to my account?

There is only a button to “change” the payment method.

Hello,

AFAIK, you can’t have an active subscription, and you have to ask customer support to remove it. If they do remove it, do they remove the payment info from their databases completely? I don’t know. If you need to maximize anonymity, you might as well also start with a new account.

It seems logical to me that a pre-requisite for removing all payment methods would be to first cancel your subscription(s). However, I don’t know if cancelling your subscriptions automatically removes your stored payment methods, or even if doing so would make visible some option for clearing stored payment methods. It may well be that you need to contact support for assistance with this, as suggested by @Neuron5569.

P.S. Personally, I pay my subscription via Account Credit, which has the advantage that I do not need to store any card info.

If you have a visa gift card with no balance left, perhaps add that and then remove your credit card.

@mdeherder You marked my response as the solution to this thread, so I am happy that I was able to help resolve the issue for you.

For the benefit of other users, it would be helpful if you could clarify what method ended up working for you: did canceling your subscription automatically remove your stored payment method, or did you have to take additional steps?

I marked the reply as the solution (or a solution) because your reasoning seemed correct to me.
Since Bitwarden does not allow one-off payments, it seems logical, though risky, to keep a record of the bank card.
Given how Bitwarden has evolved (since Kyle’s ‘departure’), a premium subscription as a way to support the project now seems pointless to me. I am currently looking into the potential consequences of losing the few ‘premium’ perks.

That is one piece of misinformation I also read somewhere these days. As I see it here (–> “Management team”) @kspearrin’s status is unchanged.

Easy mistake to make — Michael Crandell was replaced as CEO (and Stephen Morrison was replaced as CFO), but Kyle Spearrin (Founder) remains in his previous role as CTO, and Gary Orenstein remains as CCO.

And the upshot is the same — users who previously subscribed to Premium as a form of “donation” to support the project are less likely to continue to do so with the increased influence of private equity.

@mdeherder If you do end up removing your payment information from your account, please return here to share how you accomplished this.

The founder and CTO is Kyle Spearrin. He “joined” Bitwarden in 2016 and remains to this day.

The current CEO (Feb 2026 to present), Michael Sullivan replaces the former CEO, Michael Crandell (Nov 2019 to Feb 2026).

I’m definitely still here
