Help with authenticator key set up

Hi I am a bit of a noob here, need some help. I recently setup Bitwarden with a shared vault to share passwords between myself and two work partners. I saw the authentificator key feature in the panel for setting up the passwords. It says “Make 2-step verification seamless Bitwarden can store and fill 2-step verification codes. Copy and paste the key into this field.”

My partners and I need to access different accounts, but it’s frustrating when the two-factor authentication code gets sent to my partner. If he’s not around, I may not be able to log in. It sounds like an authentication key could solve this issue—is that correct?

I watch a video on youtube to set it up and it makes no sense to me. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=sMShYi7R674&ab_channel=Bitwarden
It mentions using a QR code, I do not see what QR code we are talking about, two step authentification just sends a text message with a number to the phone number on the account, there is no qr code, is there?

Sounds like you are asking a questions about the Bitwarden Password Manager, so I have moved your post into the appropriate forum category.

The integrated TOTP authenticator feature that is available in paid Bitwarden Password Manager plans is strictly for 2FA by Time-based One-Time Password (TOTP) codes. If the account that you wish to log in to does not offer any TOTP options (which are also sometimes described as “Google Authenticator”, etc.), then the Bitwarden integrated authenticator feature is not applicable.

It sounds like 2FA for this account has been set up as a text-based push notification code, which is very different from TOTP. I would suggest that you log in to the account in question, go to the security options, and check whether there is an option to enable 2FA using an authenticator app (TOTP). This would be the only way that you could use Bitwarden’s integrated authenticator function to provide 2FA for this account.

Hardly anything to add to @grb 's explanation… If you have an account, where you can set up TOTP as 2FA - and therefore are able to use Bitwarden’s integrated authenticator - I would rather recommend the Help Sites for that (Integrated Authenticator | Bitwarden) than that YouTube video…
