tl,dr: Has anyone else with Bitwarden Lite self-hosted have, or able to replicate, its inability to import ~650 items at once?
New Bitwarden Lite self-host user here, and working on a ticket with an Integration Engineer.
However, wanted to pop into the community and see if there’s anyone here who:
- Has Bitwarden Lite self hosted
Ideally you’d be, for the purposes of replication, you’d be running the instance:- Via Docker; and
- Raspberry Pi 4 Model B running Linux rpi 6.12.47+rpt-rpi-v8 #1 SMP PREEMPT Debian 1:6.12.47-1+rpt1~bookworm (2025-09-16) aarch64 GNU/Linux
- AND either:
- had problems with import sizes before OR
- has a Lite self-hosted instance they use or manage, and would be able to spare a few moments to do a test on a large item import?
At present, I’ve got 1271 items to migrate across, and even with uploading them to bitwarden.eu and exporting as JSON - the import won’t work, with either the self-hosted web client, or the Desktop app connected to the self hosted instance. The type of file used for the import (1PUX, JSON or CSV) doesn’t matter - it will always fail when there’s more than ~650 items.
And yes, I could consider splitting the JSON, but I’d rather the Integration Engineers confirm the issue, fix the underlying problem, and prevent it from happening to anyone else.

If you have seen this problem before, I’d love to hear from you.
If you have the ability to test and replicate the problem, either using Bitwarden Lite self-hosted, or the same and on a similar hardware and OS profile to where mine is deployed - I’d love to hear your results.
If you are prepared to do some testing and replication, make sure you create a separate folder or collection to target the import; and you can generate a dummy JSON or CSV file with the right number of items and information from Password Vault Generator.
