Since installing the Bitwarden extension in Brave my Google accounts (Gmail, Drive, YouTube) keep logging out randomly. This only started after adding Bitwarden. Other sites stay signed in fine.
What I have checked:
Brave is not set to clear cookies or site data on exit
Hey there, that sounds unrelated, but have you tried disabling all extensions and enabling one by one to check the behavior? I haven’t seen this behavior on my testing devices.
What OS are you on? What versions of Bitwarden/Brave are you using?
For testing purposes, I would suggest completely uninstalling the Bitwarden browser extension, and instead using the Bitwarden Desktop app to Drag-and-Fill your login credentials. Try this for a few weeks (i.e., long enough that the problem would manifest if it was still there), and see if the Google account logout problem goes away or still occurs. If it still occurs, then it is unrelated to Bitwarden; if the problem goes away, then re-install the browser extension and see if the problem re-appears. Report your results here.
I’ve been testing this issue a bit more and wanted to share what I found. The problem only happens with Google accounts like Gmail, Drive and YouTube. Other sites stay signed in without any issues.
It doesn’t seem to be caused by restarting the PC. If I log in and restart right away, I usually stay signed in. What’s happening feels more like it’s on a timer. For example, I logged in at 8pm, put the PC to sleep at 9pm, and when I turned it back on at 10:00pm I was already logged out. Then for 4 hours nothing, but turning PC off overnight I was logged out again.
Turning off PC or restarting it after logging in would not log me out, hence I think the timer thing.
Google’s security activity doesn’t show any new sign-ins when this happens, which makes me think the session tokens are just expiring or not being refreshed locally.
I tried a few things already. First, I added google.com and accounts google com to Brave’s allowed list for site data. I also added some other Google domains just in case. Second, I disabled all of my other extensions so that only Bitwarden was running. Even with just Bitwarden active, the problem still comes back.
This is now totally anecdotal evidence and maybe also totally unrelated (as in that Brave browser the Bitwarden browser extension is not even installed). But yesterday, I helped my father with his online banking, which was done on Brave (Win 11 system). And we were not directly logged out, but with every step – even if it was seconds apart from each other – the online banking system required a new authentication as “it was expired” or whatever it showed exactly. (later I found out, he mainly uses Firefox now again, and probably never experienced this issue on Brave himself)
I found that really odd – and I have no idea if my father changed some settings in Brave causing this (and we’ll never know, because if I’d ask him, I’m sure he would just claim “I didn’t do anything!”).
So, thinking of that incident yesterday, I wouldn’t rule out that it could be some change or current bug (?) in Brave.
That made me look around
and lmao it seems an issue with a new Brave update
I guess unlucky timing installing and using Bitwarden for first time at the same time with Brave broken update lol, sorry
