Google account opens with just username

When I go to login to my Google account all I get asked for is a Username and I get logged in straight away. This occurs on Win10 and Win11 both with Bitwarden installed as a Browser Extension and Desktop version.

I think I’ve set up a Passkey for the Google account but never get asked for any biometrics or pin number. My Google account details show that I’ve used a Fido 2 key but I don’t have one of those.

Other web sites like Amazon ask me to use a Passkey and Bitwarden will give a pop up which I have to click on to use the Passkey. On my Android phones its either a fingerprint or master password.

Could someone clarify what’s going on with the Google Login process, please?

If you are logged into your Chrome browser, it can pass the authentication onto Google web pages. This is internal to Chrome and works even if Bitwarden is not installed.

Thanks for the reply but I don’t use Chrome, I use Firefox.

Check to make sure you don’t have passwords stored in Firefox. Also, check your Google account settings including Security recommendations.

Firefox isn’t set to store passwords. Even so Google does not ask for a password.

Security settings in Google are as they should be. I still don’t understand why Google states I’ve used a Fido2 key to log in when I haven’t.

It would appear that if the Bitwarden extension is active, it will silently send the Passkey to Google as soon as the username field is entered. Why Windows/Google thinks its a FIDO2 key I have no idea.

A passkey is a FIDO2 “key”.

Could it be, that you’re using the inline autofill menu, choosing the passkey? – Because then exactly what you describe happens: you get logged in to Google, without clicking extra on the passkey in the “Bitwarden-passkey-popup”. – So, does it look similar to this:

?

(in my screenshot, you can see two passkeys, I get offered via the inline autofill menu…)

Thanks for the reply.

Ok, so the reference to FIDO 2 isn’t to a physical key - now I understand.

Yes , Google Log In screen looks like yours. I hadn’t noticed the little Passkeys word.
