Generated password history deleted some passwords when syncing

I use the Bitwarden browser extension for Firefox.

I was just creating a new password for encrypting important data, and right after encryption was done, I checked back in the Bitwarden browser extension for copying out the password from the password generator history … And there I saw the password for a split second, before apparently the password generator history was synced to the server, and my password just vanished (and got replaced by passwords I generated earlier on other devices …)

Is there any way, I can get back those passwords?

Is my encrypted data lost now?

In case it is any help, version information about the browser extension:

Version: 2025.9.0
SDK: ‘main (ab3c7db)’
Server version: 2025.9.2

I’m not sure I have a good answer what might have happened, but some things for starters:

You did generate the password in need with that exact browser extension?

Did you try all the passwords from the list of the generator history from that timeframe in question?

The generator history of a client doesn’t get synced with the server:

(–> Password Manager FAQs | Bitwarden)

As long as you don’t log out on that same browser extension, the generator history doesn’t get deleted – and it shouldn’t get partially deleted either.

There are two different password histories, one synced and one non-synced. The password history that is synced is the history attached to each individual vault item; it contains passwords and “hidden” custom field values that have been saved within that vault item, and is updated when one of those fields is modified. It contains at most five entries.

The global password history is not synced, but is specific to each Bitwarden app or browser extension; it persists until you log out.

Anytime that you generate a password, it is saved in the global history. If you save the generated password in a vault item (and subsequently modify that saved password), then the password will also be saved in the item-specific history.

If you have not yet logged out of your browser extension, you should be able to get your password from the global history. Go to Generator > Generator History, and use the timestamps (and/or password length) to find the password you are looking for.

@Nail1684 @grb Thanks for your warm welcome and for the reply.

Ah, I did not know that the password generator history is not synced. I definitely saw my passwords there and a moment later they vanished. So there seems to be some kind of bug there

I looked up what my password generator history looks like: It’s this on my device where this happened:

As can be seen, there is one password from June 16 2024. But several passwords I generated before 9:34 PM on Monday are just missing – apparent from the fact that the next entry is June 16. I generated about a handful of alphabetical passwords.

Is there any way to retrieve them? Should I open a bug report?

[EDIT: btw, none of the passwords show in the image have been used, so it was not necessary to blur them …]

I think you meant 9:43 pm, but regardless:

  • Are you 100% sure that the password generated prior to 9:43pm on 10/13 were generated using this exact same browser extension, while logged in to the same Bitwarden account, using the same browser profile, in this same browser, on the very same device? If there is any possibility that you may have used a different device, browser, browser profile, browser extension, or Bitwarden account?

  • Can you check the “last modified” timestamp for the encrypted container, to verify that it was last encrypted before 9:43pm on 10/13?

  • When you created the encryption password, do you recall what password parameters (length, character sets, etc.) you used? Was it an 8-character, mixed-case alphanumeric password string?
