@TerranadoVortex Some time in the last year I also learned of Buttercup. Yes, seems interesting! And in principle, the “founder” is very security oriented, I reckon… Though, if I compare it with KeePassXC, I think there are very few people who develop Buttercup, so e.g. passkeys are very far away for Buttercup (I think I checked around 1-2 month ago, so correct me if I’m wrong). And Buttercup has still no option for Argon2 as KDF… Lastly, I personally really like the design of KeePassXC and that they are actively developing the whole thing with a team (I think just 1-2 days ago the newest version 2.7.9 was released) - it’s always good for security, when not only one person looks into things…
Yeah it does seem interesting. I’m hoping for its success. Its UI needs a lot of work. The thing I like about it is that it has official apps on every platform.
It is a really small team. So, I really hope down the road they are able to continue working on the project. The creator has since just changed the way the company is structured. So, maybe faster development time and faster adoption of features? Only time will tell.
Here is a comment made by Perry Mitchell (Founder/Creator) about the company/ownership changes, and donations update which is recent from March 11, 2024.
Company/ownership changes, donations update - Open Collective
Quote from the comment made in the URL provided:
“This is good news for a few reasons:
The new company will actually be receiving revenue, which means that Buttercup, as a product, can directly benefit from this.
Due to the revenue stream, donations won’t be required to keep its basic requirements satisfied.
Paid work can more easily be performed on the platform.”
