Is there some kind of script that I could run to get Bitwarden to work on my Windows 11 Desktop Laptop? I just can’t figure it out and I really need it. Very annoying having to copy and paste passwords all the time. Or, anyone know of another program that might be easier to use on my desktop?
It is a little unclear what you are asking about.
Where are you copying passwords from, and where are you pasting passwords to?
If you are pasting credentials into login forms on your web browser, then you should stop what you’re doing, and instead install a Bitwarden Browser Extension, and use one of the provided mechanisms for “auto-filling” the username and password (i.e., transferring the credentials into the login form without using copy/paste).
However, if you are using Desktop apps or documents that are password-protected, then Bitwarden does not currently have a mechanism for auto-typing passwords into apps and documents. If you need such auto-type funcitonality, you may wish to consider using KeePass or KeePassXC.
I read a lot of confusing instructions as to how to use the desktop app to auto fill. That’s what I’m talking about. The browser extension usually work fine for most sites, some I have to copy from Bitwarden into the page. But when I open my desktop app I’m having trouble coming up with the passwords accept to open Bitwarden and look in the vault, then copy it.
The Bitwarden Desktop App cannot autofill.
If you’re already using the Bitwarden browser extension in your browser, then there is no need to also use the Bitwarden Desktop App (unless you are trying to configure an advanced option, like unlocking the extension using biometrics.
Where do you need these passwords (i.e., where are you pasting the passwords that you copy)?
Into a Desktop App. I see no sign of Bitwarden when I open a desktop app that requires a password. You mean I’m supposed to open a browser first?
No. However, it’s finally becoming clear to me what you are asking for.
As I already stated above, no Bitwarden app or browser extension has any auto-type functionality that can enter passwords into your desktop apps. If such functionality is essential to you, then you may want to consider switching from Bitwarden to a different password manager, like KeePass or KeePassXC.
At least no official app For un-official, but also open-source solutions, there is GitHub - anonymous1184/bitwarden-autotype: Bitwarden Auto-Type for Windows for windows, and my client GitHub - quexten/goldwarden: A feature-packed Bitwarden compatible desktop integration on Linux, and for Mac, the desktop app seems to be targeting the native Apple autofill functionality very soon: [PM-4532] investigate add support for native mac os credential manager in desktop application by coroiu · Pull Request #7478 · bitwarden/clients · GitHub
So any of the above might also be an alternative instead of switching to keepass.
Ok thanks, but I’m sure that I didn’t have this problem on my old machine with windows 10. Not sure how I always seemed to have the password and now on my new laptop with windows 11 (along with a few other annoying problems) I do.
Thanks, that looks a little complicated for me. I need something simple and automatic.
Well, it is known that the Bitwarden clients apps have never had any auto-typing functionality for filling in passwords into Windows Desktop apps, whether on Windows 11, Windows 10, or earlier. Thus, either you were using a password management app other than Bitwarden, or your memory is inaccurate.
Late reply here.
I think that if bitwarden can autofill credentials on android, it should also be able to do that on windows apps. That kind of integration would be a game changer for bitwarden.
Yes, the mobile apps (iOS and Android) can auto-fill both mobile apps and web pages – at least to the extent that the operating system cooperates.
But no, the windows/mac/linux desktop applications can NOT auto-fill today. There is a feature request to add it (go vote!).
Voted, but it seems like no one cares about that request, it’s there from 2018…
