I’ve had a large number of people out of my organization have an issue when they update a password on a website, the Bitwarden extension does not notice the change. So instead of the popup to update the password, they have to go into the settings of that password and manually update it. Granted, this isn’t all that difficult, but it is extra steps. I’ve seen it on a number of different systems. I do see it from time to time, but not in the frequency that some people are seeing. Also on sites that works perfectly fine (the pop up works for me), but doesn’t prompt the person when they do it. It creates a level of frustration with staff as it should work and we can see why the extension isn’t prompting to update the password. Any thoughts as to what we can look for, would be helpful.
Not quite what you are looking for, but the more reliable workflow is to change the password in Bitwarden and let it auto-fill. Like this:
- Visit web site.
- Open vault entry for edit
- Copy/Paste current password from “password” field into “notes” field (or another one of your choosing),
- Have Bitwarden auto-generate a new password and save it.
- Back on the website, auto-fill the new password (e.g. Ctl-Shift-L).
- Paste the old password into the old-password field.
- Save web page.
The benefit of this approach is that the new and old password are written somewhere accessible at all times.
Yes, this is an effective workaround. Just like I said above, extra steps. My frustration is trying to use the explanation “well it should work” to people who are not all that tech savvy and do not see the importance of good password management.
