Exports from macOS Desktop app missing

Hi,

I’m trying to export my vault (Desktop macOS). I’m asked for my password, but when I click download the popup just closes and I cannot find any export. It’s not in my documents or downloads folder. Any ideas where I should be able to find my export?

Thanks, any suggestions are much appreciated.

On desktop, you should see a pop up that asks to confirm where you want to download the file to (defaults to downloads folder) which version of Bitwarden for desktop are you using?

Yeah, I think that’s the issue. The only popup I get is asking for my password and the download button. After that, nothing happens.

Version is 2022.9.1 (4562)

I am having the same problem, just started recently - I select to export the .json, it asks for my password, and then shows it is exporting, but has never asked where it should go.
I have tried three times, but cannot find the files - have searched with spotlight for all .json files, and they don’t come up.
Has this glitch started again?

Vesion 2024.10.0 (31484), MacOS 14.7

I’ve changed the title of this thread to better reflect the topic (was: “Where is desktop vault export stored?”); hopefully, this will increase the chances that somebody who can help will see the question and respond.

Good point!
I’ve never experienced this before, and the last export was on 07 September of this year, so am guessing something has changed between then and now.
It’s pretty worrying, as I may well have three unencrypted files hanging around on my Mac, somewhere…

I’m not familiar with the macOS desktop app, but I believe it has some integration with Safari and the Safari extension? If so, perhaps you can check the preferences that have been set up in your Safari browser, to see if there is a specification for the default download location.

When downloading via the web extension (Safari) it asks where you want to save the file, and then you can select an alternative location to the one automatically selected (Documents).
I changed this to Downloads and it downloaded to there.
However, that does not appear to have synced to the desktop app and, when exporting from the app, still shows it is downloading, without choosing a location (and cannot be found on the computer).

Tested encrypted .json export with Bitwarden 2024.10.2 on MacOS Sequoia 15.0.1 with normal behaviour: it asked for location, defaulting to Downloads, and placed the file there.

This is not affected by Safari preferences (a long shot by @grb wondering where the problem might be).

I had not requested an encrypted download (as I encrypt the disk image file I make of it with the Disk Utility app and delete the original), but testing the encrypted version I get the same result - no request for where to save it, and a lost/missing saved file (if it is actually writing the file).

Regarding the problem, I have not encountered that before with any application so the only idea I have left at present is BW and OS versions. It is not process because you have exported before. Our versions are different. Try 2024.10.2 first, if you have not already.

As a side note, I too do not normally encrypt the export but I send it straight to an encrypted .dmg so sfaik it is never on local disk (being from the app, not the browser). I encrypted this one only because I was saving it to Downloads.

Speculative curiosity, are you able to show a screenshot of the last dialogue before clicking a button causes it all to disappear without a trace?

Well, it would seem it is fixed in BW 2024.10.2

Now behaves as it did a couple of months back.

Presumably it was picked up as a bug in 2024.10.1, but not reported on the forum.
