Addition to Vault Export feature

Need

  • ability to export vault without password field

Reasons

  • don’t want to store passwords, encrypted or not in another location
  • having a backup of accounts (possibly 100’s) information (username, URL, etc) is still of value and safer to backup. At least you have knowledge of the accounts that need to have passwords reset
  • I often use vault search to find URLs of accounts as I need them. To have to look these up again would be painful
  • scenario is I’m locked out of Bitwarden (lose password) or account is lost in another way. I need to go to a protected account but don’t have the ability to look it up in Bitwarden anymore. With this feature I’d be able to at least recover my accounts in bitwarden through an import and then reset the passwords as needed and not have to take the risk of backing up my passwords in another location.

Possible solutions

  • have a simple option for password-less export
  • have the ability to choose the fields you want exported

I may have misunderstood what you’re asking for, but is already possible to create an export that doesn’t require a file password. Just go to the export tool (e.g., in the browser extension, go to Settings > Vault > Export Vault), and specify the file format to be either .csv or .json — anything other than .json (Encrypted). Then click Export vault and follow the prompts.

I think what you are asking for is an export that contains all your non-sensitive information (URLs, username, notes, etc.), but that does not contain sensitive information, such as passwords. You can somewhat accomplish this with the CSV export, pulling it into a excel or any other spreadsheet program and deleting the columns you deem sensitive. However, I do not think it a good approach.

If you trust Bitwarden to keep your passwords safe and secure, you should equally trust its password-protected JSON export. They use the exact same encryption technology. This is a great backup format in part because it is (mostly) complete and because it can either be imported into a new Bitwarden account or into KeepassXC (a competitor). Of course, you do need to protect your backup password at least as well as your master password. The best place for it is on your emergency kit,
