I can use fingerprint to unlock the desktop program. Then, in the Edge browser, the button is there to unlock with biometrics but it never launches the Windows Hello window to accept my fingerprint.
Edge extension settings:
Unlock with biometrics is checked.
Ask for biometrics on launch is checked.
Have disabled/enabled extension.
Have rebooted laptop numerous times.
It worked fine for at least a year, didn’t change any settings that I’m aware of. Any ideas, please?
Okay, then I would suggest, to log out of both apps, deinstall and reinstall them - and set everything up again.
Another thought: was there a Windows Update, which might have caused changes for you in Windows Hello? If not, maybe the other way round would be also an idea: update Windows to the latest, if not done already.
(BTW: “It worked fine for at least a year” really confuses me, because of changes in the desktop app and browser extensions regarding a security “thing” with biometrics, caused a lot of uproar, I would say around spring / early summer this year. - So, interesting that you didn’t notice a change all this time.)
Yup I noticed the change - you have to unlock the desktop app first before the browser extension. But I’ve always been able to unlock both with my fingerprint until recently (probably about a week ago).
I did do the uninstall/reinstall of just the extension since posting this, but I’ll go the full ‘nuke everything from orbit’ route. Only thing I’m not really willing to do is reinstall Windows. Win11 Pro 22631.4169 is up to date, as is Edge 129.0.2792.52.
Oh no, I wasn’t suggesting reinstalling Windows. That would be a little extreme.
Just a sanity check: Your biometrics do work in general, right? (I think you wrote in your first post, that can do the first unlock with the fingerprint, right?)
I uninstalled the extension and program. I uninstalled all the September Windows updates and rebooted. This broke my Start Menu (thanks Microsoft) but the Windows updates seemed to reinstall automatically at some point and fix the Start Menu after a couple reboots. Then I reinstalled Bitwarden desktop app, logged in and set up biometrics, then installed the Edge Extention, logged in and set up biometrics. Then rebooted.
Now the extension prompts for biometrics and the window actually pops up and I can authenticate with my finger.
What a freaking hassle. I suspect Microsoft moreso than Bitwarden. In any case, thank you Nail1684, I appreciate your responses!
