Download progress meter when logging in to new device

I encountered a problem with the ‘visibility of system status’ UX heuristic when logging into a new device. I expected to log in and then, after a short load time, see the contents of my password vault, however it’s been stuck on the loading throbber for a few minutes.

I went to close the browser extension window thinking it was just a visual bug and needed to refresh the window, but only then did I get a dialogue asking me if I wanted to ‘cancel the download’.

If possible, it would be great to have a download meter when you’re logging in on a new device, so that it’s clearer to the user that the extension is downloading the passwords (and subsequently allow the user to make an informed choice about what they’re doing with their available bandwith), because without that dialogue I would have never known what the extension was doing, and might have thought the extension had stopped working.

Hi there - thank you for your note. The product should be performant and immediately load so there is no need for a “download dialogue”. We are investigating loading issues closely. Could you give more details on the following?

  • OS and hardware specs
  • Estimate of number of items
  • Browser extension
  • Is this happening on initial load or unlock?
  • Any other details that can help us troubleshoot

Hi Gina,

No worries, here’s the requested details:

  • OS is Windows 11 Home (though heavily lobotomised through RegEdit to remove ai/spyware)
  • Specs are: Intel(R) Core™ i5-8250U CPU, 8GB RAM, NVIDIA GeForce MX130 Graphics
  • 169 items total
  • Firefox browser extension
  • It only happened when I first logged in on my laptop which I hadn’t used in a while
  • I believe I’d changed my email sometime between the last time I used the extension on my laptop and logging in again

Hopefully that helps!

How long did it take to eventually log in?

I don’t know the specifics but I’d had a game downloading on steam when I started so I thought I’d give it more time after the other download finished. It would have had to be somewhere around 10-20 min mark where I decided it likely wasn’t going to resolve if I left it to its own devices so I ended up restarting my computer, and it seemed to work after that.

(I should clarify that technically it logged in instantly, the issue was that it wouldn’t load any of the passwords in the vault once logged in)
