With the whole minimum of 6 word paraphrase that has happened within the last week I just noticed this.
To me having this section in red seems kind of inefficient and wondering everyone else’s opinion.
Above the section in red you are asking what you want to generate. Why not include paraphrase in that drop down also?
I feel like it is unnatural for someone to say I want to generate a password that is a passphrase. But I feel like it is natural for someone to say I want to generate a passphrase.
It is for me, on both Windows Chrome (v2024-11-2) and iOS (v2024-11-0).
Perhaps you need to update to the current production version on your phone. IIRC, there was a recent issue where that menu item went missing, but fixed in the next update.
@DenBesten@Nail1684 It seems to me that @MFKDGAF is not suggesting that there is a possible bug/anomaly, but merely expressing that the UI seems inefficiently designed (by requiring two selections to be made for generating passphrases — first, specify that instead of a username, one wants to generate a “pass-thing”, and second, specify that instead of a pass-word, one wants to generate a pass-phrase).
In the redesigned version of the browser extension (beta release), this UI “redundancy” has indeed been address, with a single selection menu for pass-things (and a second selection only for specifying username type):
I believe that the final version of the beta browser extension will ultimately serve as the basis for redesign of the mobile app UIs, as well, which would address the concern raised by @MFKDGAF in this thread.
@grb I’m not sure if I am too thick to follow you today, but in the Android version 2024.11.5 the “redesign” is already there (PS: and by that, no “double selection” existent):
Correct. Maybe redundant wasn’t the correct word to use but inefficient.
The app asks you “What would you like to generate?”. To me, someone isn’t going to say I want to generate a password that is a passphrase, but instead they will say they either want to generate a password or passphrase. So by having to choose generate a password then choose a passphrase as a password type, doesn’t feel natural.
I also find it kind of odd the way Android presents the selection of username, password and passphrase is different from iOS. I like the Android way better than iOS. The iOS version I’m on is 2024.11.0 (1680), which is on the new UI.
So I am kind of confused you referencing the beta (web browser) extension.
@MFKDGAF … and as you can see in my screenshots above of the Android mobile app 2024.11.5, you can directly choose “password” / “passphrase” / “username” now…
My guess would be, that it has to do with the recent Android release of the mobile app… and I can rememeber, that there was another issue with the generator. So I would assume, that that change in the Android version will also come to the iOS version…
PS: The blog article is one of the early informations on the browser extension redesign… the first “testable” beta was available around 5-6 weeks ago… and it may be released next month (or January?).
