Would love for this to be implemented. Would also be neat if you could set a second lock action, such as lock on system lock and lock after X minutes. Don’t think this would be as useful as what was originally proposed in this thread but its something I would use if it were there.
I agree that this would improve security a lot for my use case. I am restarting my browser many times a day and since I can’t be bothered to enter my master-password everytime, I just set the timeout to lock the vault after 15 minutes and allow to unlock it with a pin. This means that I never have to enter my master-password, which is not only bad for security, but I am also worried that I will forget the password at some point.
Ideally I would like to have seperate timeouts for the lock and logout actions, such that Bitwarden asks me for my master-password e.g. once per day or better after system lock and in between locks the vault with my pin after a 15 minute timeout.
@Hoptional Although there are some exceptions, restarting the browser is supposed to require a login (with the full master password), as described in the documentation. You may want to experiment with a different browser. If you need help or have questions, you can post in the Ask the Community Forum.
In the Firefox extension, when setting up a PIN, there is a checkbox where I can select whether or not the master password will be required after a browser restart. I unchecked it, because I do not want to enter the password everytime I open my browser, which means that I never have to enter the master password unless I logout manually.
Bumping this, I can’t see any way this would lead to anything other than more security
This is definitely a needed feature!

I created an account solely to vote for this feature.
Just created the account to bump this request up. This is the one thing I need as a user to make Bitwarden experience perfect. At this point, I am manually changing what option is taken for lock out and logout whenever I leave home since logging out on system lock or browser restart is too much hassle at home but in public, it is absolutely necessary
This is my first feature request, so I hope I’m doing this right. I’ll just take the “be specific” guideline quite literally and will describe my desired behavior:
Enable two separate timeout options for the Safari browser extension that can be set in parallel:
-
When computer is locked (screen saver or sleep): Lock Vault
-
When either computer or the browser is fully shut-down: Logout Vault
These options would give me as a user more flexibility and control, and they would also align better with common macOS workflows.
Often time i wish i had the option of choosing different timeouts for lock and log out.
Example #1:
I restart my device. Naturally i would assume that i am logged out and have to re-authenticate my account. However, if the vault timeout is set to Lock this is prevented, which in my opinion poses a security threat.
Example #2:
Similarly, i would like to choose to unlock my account using biometrics. However, the thought of someone getting access to my vault on a lost device only using my biometrics only, seems sketchy. I would want to set the log out timeout to a few hours but my lock timeout to 5 min to prevent that.
This topic was raised 4 years ago without any result, but i believe deserves more attention, since for me this is a key security feature.
@Trousers8 Welcome to the forum!
I merged your post into the existing feature request thread. Don’t forget to click the Vote button at the top of the thread if you support this request.
+1 for this feature
@Gheedoh I just saw your Feature Request (FR) - and merged it with this existing FR to the same topic.
