Clear selection of item when search text has been cleared or changed
Feature function
Selection of item
It will fix userâs misunderstanding why strange item is loaded into the right panel when search text has been changed and the item is not part of search result
Itâs not just for search, itâs anytime you click on an item it populates the right side window, and there is no way to clear it. You can click another item, but then that item is displayed.
There HAS to be a way to clear the right side window that displays all the sensitive info from your item.
This is a minor feature request that I feel is warranted.
In the desktop client when you open a vault item I couldnât find any way to dismiss the vault item without closing the entire application. You can click on other vault items to hide the one youâre looking at but that just opens another vault item.
It would be nice for me to keep my Bitwarden handy at times when I need it repeatedly, but not leave my 2FA tokens constantly running on my second screen for anyone to glance at.
Not sure if itâs a good idea but I was also thinking about maybe having some configurable auto-dismiss period? Like after 30 seconds of inactivity in the app, the vault item is dismissed.
It would help userâs operational security a great deal for all BW clients to have a way to CLEAR the currently displayed entry. The desktop client currently retains the current entry and continues to display it after minimizing or entering something else in the search box and has no timeout.
The only way to âclearâ the displayed entry is to display some other entry.
For that reason, in the absence of a feature to automatically clear the displayed entry (much like the vault timeout locks the app), there should be some method in the UI to clear the current entry. Alas, only âaddâ, âeditâ, and âdeleteâ buttons are available.
Not even clearing the search bar clears the displayed entry. Even entering a search value when there are no results fails to clear the previous item displayed.
However, there is a workaround. Create an entry named â~~BLANK ENTRY TO CLEAR SCREENâ. That will always sort to the top of the list, and you can select it for display, and clear the previous entry from being displayed.
This should have been built into the UI from the start.
Clearing the search? Clear the displayed entry.
Entering anything in the search (i.e. changing the search)? Clear the displayed entry.
Vault timeout locks the vault? Clear the displayed entry. You can get it back by selecting the item again from the vault.
Feeling like someone is shoulder surfing? Click something (e.g. clear the search per first scenario or a âClear Entryâ button) to clear the displayed entry.
Sensing a pattern here?
Currently, there is NO ability to clear the currently displayed entry to manually intervene and prevent display of credentials (like MEMO field content specifically, which is often used to store additional authentication details - backup codes, security questions/answers, Account IDs, etc.
Please can we have a better way to securely use BitWarden on the desktop than a workaround/hack?
Iâve merged a few related posts, and changed the thread title to make it easier to search for this topic (was: âUnselect item when search text is cleared (or changed)â).
To support this feature request, please click the Vote button at the top of the thread.
Having the same issue. One way to implement this would be to clear the item when Esc is pressed, like WhatsApp Web and Telegram do for conversations.
My current workaround is to create an âEmpty Itemâ in an âEmpty Folderâ that I can select when I need to hide the current item, but itâs a very annoying way to do it.
It would be nice, if when using the desktop app, after the credentials are viewed, the Item Information pane could be cleared. When done it just stays there and remains visible until you replace it with the next âsecret.â It would be nice if there was a button to clear the pane to make it more difficult to shoulder surf, etc.
To Clarify: while using the web app, you can close the pop-up with the secret info, removing it from being viewable to passersby. But the Desktop App, the info stays visible until replaced by new information.
Iâm confused - in your title you mention the browser extension. Your tag is âtag:desktopâ and the text speaks of the desktop app. So, are you talking about the browser extensions or the desktop apps?
A workaround⌠click the [+] button at the bottom of the page that creates a new item. Then donât put anything in the form (to avoid the âunsaved changesâ message).
Slightly less convenient, click the âsendâ tab and then click back to the âmy vaultâ tab.
for a longer time I see a specific âbehaviourâ of Bitwarden which, in my opinion, makes no sense.
Select an item, you will see the details of that item.
Select a (different) folder.
You still see the details of the (previously) selected item.
Maybe this is intentional. But for me it is confusing because this item is not in the newly selected folder. So it makes no sense to show it. This detail area should be empty (or show the Bitwarden logo) when no item is selected.
Solution: Hide the details of a (previous) selected item when it is not selected anymore in the liste of items of a folder (by selecting a folder).
