Hi all,
Some follow-up on this.
TL;DR
Bitwarden is deprecating support for some accounts created prior to 2017.
Does this apply to my account?
Probably not. Almost all accounts created before 2017 have been migrated already. Fewer than 2,000 accounts remain that need to be migrated. However, if you got an email from Bitwarden about this, then you have an account registered at vault.bitwarden.com that has not been migrated.
Why is Bitwarden dropping support?
@Quexten explained this well, so I’ll quote that explanation:
For some background, accounts created prior to 2019 [sic] were created using an encryption scheme that used the key derived from your masterpassword directly to encrypt account data. This is inflexible and has significant risk to create vulnerabilities. Forced migration has been active for a while, and you cannot log in on these accounts on anything other than the web client. Support for this encryption scheme will be dropped as per the date mentioned in the email (corresponding git commit: [PM-20225] Prevent legacy users without userkey from logging in by quexten · Pull Request #14267 · bitwarden/clients · GitHub).
How do I migrate my account?
Log into the web app at vault.bitwarden.com with the email address associated with the unmigrated account (the one Bitwarden sent an email to). The prompt to migrate will show after login, and looks like this (in English). If you’re still worried this might apply to your account, you can follow the steps above - if you’re not prompted to migrate, then you’re all set!
