Current bug (?): the desktop app resets the "Always on top" setting (at least on Windows)

After the posts by @Imperium (see the following posts down below) I checked this myself: under probably various circumstances the setting for “Always on top” resets itself.

I described this in detail here, but unfortunately this was closed already:

But as I reliably can reproduce it, even on a freshly installed desktop app (and on my “old installation” before), I think it should be looked at again. @djsmith85 Would it be possible for you to try to reproduce it (following my exact steps described in the GitHub issue - I even made a video of it afterwards - reproduces the loss of this setting every time)?

PS: I set the tag for Windows, as me and @Imperium are both on Windows… don’t know, if this OS specific… (@djsmith85)

Has anyone been having problems with the Bitwarden Windows Desktop App?

Ever since an update the Bitwarden desktop screen pops-up after booting to Windows [note by @Nail1684: here the thread about this bug: Current bug: Desktop app doesn't "start to tray"/minimized (though set as such)], and also the Window function Always on Top selection is no longer remembered, and I have to select it at each boot.

Anyone else having this problem?

@Imperium I moved your post into this existing topic. – As you can see, there are reports this could be resolved with desktop app version 2025.4.2. What version are you on?

@Nail1684 Greetings,

I’ve just realised I did not have the Start to tray icon checked. I have just done so, and the screen no longer pops up at boot.

However, the Always on Top function is not staying on, and I distinctly remember it used to do so, even after reboot. Now I have to re-enable it at every boot.

I don’t use the extension; I have always dragged and dropped the username and password from the desktop app directly into the corresponding fields, and with the Always on Top function enabled the window wouldn’t close when I did this, but now I have to drag the username over, then re-open the window to do the same with the password.

It’s only a slight inconvenience, but with the Always on Top function remembered, I did not have to re-open the window.

I didn’t have “always on top” activated so I can’t compare with previous behaviour - but I can reproduce that it deactivates itself and that doesn’t seem right…

Just FYI, the browser extension can also drag & drop (or “drag & fill” as it’s called now). And the extension can also autofill, which is a recommended function for logging in on websites.

@Nail1684 I’ll have to try the extension out.

I opened a bug report to that: "Always on top" option deactivates itself · Issue #14885 · bitwarden/clients · GitHub Unfortunately, they (BW) closed it rather quick as “not reproducible”. I just responded there again (as I can indeed reliably reproduce it) - and it certainly would help, if you added your experience there, if you can and will. (you just need a GitHub account for that)

@Imperium As you can see, I opened an extra thread for your second issue (the “Always on top” setting).

I moved our discussion now into this new thread, as the our posts turned out to be mainly about the loss of the “Always on top” setting now - and as your first issue (“Start to tray” not working) was already dealt with in Current bug: Desktop app doesn't "start to tray"/minimized (though set as such) (and fixes for that are already on it’s way).

@Nail1684 Thanks chap!

You’re welcome!

But as I wrote - my bug report was closed for now, and without any other people chiming in there and/or reporting the same bug, nothing will happen there anytime soon, I guess… So again, I would suggest, you add your voice there directly as well.

Only this morning, I tried to reproduce it on my Win 11 laptop as well - and again, if I follow my exact steps I described on GitHub, I instantly could reproduce it.

(I can only speculate, they either didn’t use Windows (11?) or didn’t follow my exact steps (or both) when they couldn’t reproduce it, as it seems to be a very reliable bug for me. :sweat_smile:)
