Configuring Bitwarden from the beginning

One further question. What I’ve just done returned this:

PS C:\Users\hunt\Desktop> cd “C:\Users\hunt\Desktop\bitwarden”
PS C:\Users\hunt\Desktop\bitwarden> type bitwarden_export.json | ConvertFrom-Json) | Select-Object
At line:1 char:46

  • type bitwarden_export.json | ConvertFrom-Json) | Select-Object
  • ~

Unexpected token ‘)’ in expression or statement.
At line:1 char:48

  • type bitwarden_export.json | ConvertFrom-Json) | Select-Object
  • ~

An empty pipe element is not allowed.
+ CategoryInfo : ParserError: ( , ParentContainsErrorRecordException
+ FullyQualifiedErrorId : UnexpectedToken

It appears that the parentheses are a problem. I tried copying both, and this is the result:
PS C:\Users\hunt\Desktop\bitwarden> (type bitwarden_export.json | ConvertFrom-Json) | Select-Object

encrypted folders

False {@{id=2d49ca92-c4bc-42de-8f93-b0bc01250981; name=Business}, @{id=3708e87b-590d-4f39-a52e-b0bc01250981; nam...

So I guess the problem is I don’t understand exactly what “the following expression” is?

So, since you haven’t reported any trouble with the data conditioning and import into Bitwarden, can I assume that this procedure went off without a hitch?

If you hover your mouse over the “expression”, you should see a little “Copy” icon in the top right corner, which you can click (see orange circle in the screenshot below). Click the “Copy” icon, then right-click into the PowerShell window to paste the full expression:

Sounds good. Assuming that your import worked (i.e., you saw the success message “A total of N items were imported”), then navigate to the login page of any one of your stored accounts.

If you see a padlock on your Bitwarden browser extension icon at the top of the browser, then unlock the browser extension (by clicking the icon and verifying your identity as requested by the prompt). The padlock looks like this:

After unlocking your browser extension, do you now see a number in the lower-left corner of the browser extension icon, as shown below?

If so, try pressing the keyboard shortcut Ctrl+Shift+L. Did the username and password get transferred to the login form?

Thanks (yet again) for the tip about copying the expression. I generated the time-sorted list. The problem (mine) is that all the bottom half of the list have exactly the same date and time. The ones above that include a number of items I’d been struggling with (all at one URL with different logins and passwords, that I had been trying to straighten out when I got frustrated and decided I needed to go back and reorganize the whole password thing. As I expected, not many of the items in that list are ones I’m going to have trouble with.

Now I need to start working with Bitwarden, as you suggest. One further question: is there any reason I need to keep the desktop app? Is there an advantage to having both it and the browser extension?

The Desktop app is not needed unless you want to set up your browser extension so that it can be unlocked using biometrics (e.g., a fingerprint or face scan).

It would be helpful if you could answer the three questions I posed above:

  • So, since you haven’t reported any trouble with the data conditioning and import into Bitwarden, can I assume that this procedure went off without a hitch?
  • do you now see a number in the lower-left corner of the browser extension icon, as shown below?
  • Did the username and password get transferred to the login form?

I’m puzzled again. Yes, the procedure went off, as far as I could see, fine. And I did see a lock on the icon. But when I go to a page where I normally need to enter a passport, nothing happens: I’m looking ag a message which says, “There are no logins available to auto-fill for the current browser tab.” And no number in the Bitwarden icon. The site, however, is listed in the vault, with what appear to be the correct userid and password.

OK, we have some more sleuthing to do. It is possible that the URL values in your Lastpass export were corrupt.

Go to one website for which you have an account saved in your Bitwarden vault (choose a website for which you don’t mind publicly disclosing that you have an account there).

While on the website’s login page, open the browser extension, search for the saved item in the vault, and click on the item in the search results to view the details. Scroll down to the bottom, and click on Auto-fill and Save:

Now, please answer these questions:

  1. Did the saved username and password get auto-filled into the login form on the website?
  2. Do you now see a number on the Bitwarden browser extension icon.

Please note that it I am asking these questions to try to diagnose the problem; I am not (yet) suggesting that the procedure above should be used to “fix” the issues with your vault.

Well. When i clicked on auto-fill and save, I got a red error message saying “unable to auto-fill the selected item on this page. Copy and paste the information instead.” The username and password are not auto-filled, and there is no number on the icon.

OK, this error can occasionally occur for unrelated reasons. Please try a different website until you find one for which you are able to use the “Auto-fill and Save” function without error. Then report your observations (answers to my questions above) for that site.

Assuming that you find a website that started out with no number on the Bitwarden extension icon, but then showed a number 1 after you use the “Auto-fill and Save” method, what I want you to do is to re-open the details page for that vault item, where you should now see two entries labeled “Website” (as shown in the screen shot below):

Please click on the “Copy” icon (circled in orange in the screen shot above) for the two “Website” fields, one at a time, and paste the copied URL strings into your response.

I’ve now tried five or six sites. Some of them seem to log me in because the browser’s got some kind of memory (I’ve disabled the Chrome password keeper). The three that didn’t sign me in simply when I clicked the link all displayed the red error message.

I’m wondering if I should clear my cache?

Well the fact that you have another password manager running in your browser is going to interfere with Bitwarden and considerably complicate any efforts to troubleshoot your problems.

Could it be the Lastpass browser extension that you installed when doing your vault export? If that is still installed, you should uninstall it.

As far as I’m aware there is no other password manager running in Chrome. And I’ve extirpated LastPass altogether: uninstalled it and deleted the account on their server.

If there’s something else managing passwords I don’t know what it is.

Do this: Lock the Bitwarden browser extension (which will prevent it from auto-filling anything). Now go back to one of the websites where you were getting logged in when you tried it previously. Are you still getting logged in? If so, log out of the website, clear your cache, restart your browser, and return to that website. Are you still getting logged in? If so, you need to find out what is logging you in, so that you can disable it.

If you have a Google account, try logging out of your Google account (then clearing your cache, and restarting your browser).

Try Incognito mode, which is supposed to disable all browser extensions (unless you have explicitly authorized an extension to be able to run in Incognito mode). Are you still getting logged in? If not, then there is some browser extension running that is logging you in.

I got knocked off again (new user) and paused for an hour. Lost my login info because I’d cleared the cache and had a hard time getting back on and finding my way back to this thread.

I’ve done all that, cleared the cache made sure password help was turned off, etc. tried to log on to an account, went to the vault, and got the error message about not being able to auto-fill. I seem to be getting that every time now.

I’m done for the day. I’ll come back to this tomorrow. Have to say I’m fairly frustrated: there has to be something obvious; clearly nobody else must have this much difficulty using Bitwarden, so it’s something peculiar I’ve done somewhere. I’ve been working on computers since I bought my Osborne in 1982, so I’ve picked up a lot of bad habits.

Yes, there is definitely something very peculiar about your specific set-up.

Do you have any way to get to a clean slate? Perhaps use a different computer, or set up a new user account on your current computer? Or maybe install a different browser, or at least create a new browser profile in Chrome?

By the way, no matter whether the Bitwarden browser extension is able to do its job or not, you can always go to the Web Vault to retrieve your login credentials for the forum (assuming that you saved them in the vault at some point).

@bw-admin @JaiBitwarden @sj-bitwarden : Could somebody please increase the trust level for this user, as the commenting restrictions are preventing me from helping (the user now has two accounts: @Russ08 and @Russell8 — they had to create a second account to overcome the rate limiting on the forum).

In addition, to prevent confusion caused by some websites that can sometimes create difficulties for Bitwarden’s auto-fill function, let’s do the following to set up a test login for a simple login form that should not cause difficulties.

In the Web Vault, click the blue New :arrow_down_small: button, and select New > Item, then fill in the five pieces of information shown below, and click Save:

Note that the value for the URI 1 field should be the following (which you may want to copy from here and paste into the New Item form in the Web Vault):

senglehardt.com

After you have saved this item, you can log out of the Web Vault. Now unlock the Bitwarden browser extension, either by clicking the Bitwarden icon at the top of your browser, or by using the keyboard shortcut Ctrl+Shift+Y. Verify your identity to unlock the extension.

Finally, navigate your browser to the following link:

https://senglehardt.com/demo/no_boundaries/loginmanager/index.html

Check the following:

  1. Do you see a number in your Bitwarden browser extension icon?
  2. Does pressing Ctrl+Shift+L autofill the username and password into the form? (No need to submit the form, by the way.)
  3. After reloading the test login form by pressing F5, what happens if you use the Auto-fill and Save option in Bitwarden’s browser extension (after opening the “BWTEST” item to view its details)?

Yes, I’ve saved a number of downloaded files, so I have cumbersome access to pretty well all my passwords. I’m considering hauling out my travel laptop to see if I can clear it off and get to a clean slate. But I’m going to stay at this for a while.

I seem to have two accounts on this site, by the way, one of which I can’t reach to reply to. I received two messages just now on both of them, and neither of them seems to be displayed on this thread.

I’m going to try your latest strategy in a bit, but I’d like to clarify something first. What’s the difference between the Web Vault and whatever I access via the Bitwarden browser extension? It seems I can log into the Web Vault while the browser extension is locked. The two are separate, and somehow synced?

I’m about to be interrupted so it’s going to be a while before I get back to trying the new strategy.
